Chief
Watergate committee by the man who built its
investigating team and directed its activities
and who here records the trials and tribulations
leading to the open televised hearings which
absorbed and stunned a nation.
Here, for the first time, Samuel Dash reveals
what really went on behind the closed doors of
Sam
In the beginning the committee s investiga¬
tions were faced with a wall of silence, until
James McCord began to talk to Dash; but even
as leads began to develop and the evidence of
criminal activity within the White House grew,
there was open dissension and political maneuv¬
ering among the committee members. Dash re¬
veals, for instance, that Senator Howard Baker
was in constant secret liaison with the White
House, not only to try to change the strategy of
the hearings but to counteract ahead of time
what would be disclosed.
One of the most dramatic moments in the
investigation came when Sam Dash alone
with only Ervin s knowledge
John Dean in all-night sessions which revealed
for the first time the culpability of the President
of the United States.
Dash also set up a computer system that al¬
lowed the staff to find quickly almost any in¬
formation they wanted, and this was particu¬
larly helpful when they discovered the gold
mine of CREEP
chives. Then came the crisis with Archibald
Cox, who attempted to halt the hearings be¬
cause he
gation. And from private interrogation of Alex¬
ander Butterfield came the startling information
that the President had actually taped most of his
conversations
that marked the beginning of the end.
Chief Counsel is anything but a dry summary
of the Watergate committee s activities; it is a
human document full of well-defined personali¬
ties, conversations, arguments and altercations
which, taken together, present a fascinating and
absorbing portrait of investigators and politi¬
cians who were sincerely trying to find out the
truth
how much of that truth should come out.
