STRATIFIED BOTH ON OUTCOME AND COVARIATE OF A FIRST PHASE STUDY, HAVE
BEEN PROPOSED OVER 10 YEARS AGO AND HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO RESULT IN
EFFICIENT ESTIMATES WITH RESPECT TO STANDARD DESIGNS. THE EFFICIENCY
DEPENDS HOWEVER ON THE SAMPLING FRACTIONS IN EACH STRATUM. OUR AIM IS TO
OBTAIN OPTIMAL SAMPLING FRACTIONS FOR A GIVEN FIRST PHASE SAMPLE. NO
GLOBAL OPTIMAL DESIGNS EXIST AND LO- CAL OPTIMAL DESIGNS DEPEND ON
SCENARIOS COMPRISING THE TRUE DISEASE MODEL AND THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN
THE PHASE 1 AND PHASE 2 INFORMA- TION. WE DEVELOP WHAT WE CALL AN
ADMISSIBILITY TEST WHICH TESTS COM- PATIBILITY OF A SCENARIO WITH THE
PHASE 1 INFORMATION. WE PRESENT A STRATEGY FOR OBTAINING D AND A OPTIMAL
DESIGNS FOR ADMISSIBLE SCENAR- IOS. WE APPLY THIS WORK ON A STUDY WHICH
PROVIDED THE INITIAL MOTIVA- TION. THIS STUDY WAS A LUNG CANCER
CASE-CONTROL STUDY IN WHICH THE AIM WAS TO IDENTIFY OCCUPATIONAL
RISK-FACTORS, ADJUSTING FOR OCCUPATIONAL ASBESTOS EXPOSURE AND SMOKING.
WE FOCUS ON QUANTIFYING THE EFFECT OF OCCUPATIONAL ASBESTOS EXPOSURE.
THE INITIAL INFORMATION CONSISTED IN DURATION OF ASBESTOS EXPOSURE,
WHILE THE SECOND PHASE INFORMATION CONSISTED IN CUMULATIVE ASBESTOS
EXPOSURE BASED ON EXPERT-RATING OF EXPOSURE INTENSITY.
