SECTION II. SECULAR STUDIES
INTRODUCTION
The complete microfilm of one of the world s great manuscript
libraries is an event that will be welcomed by scholars working
in all subject areas. Although it is best known for its great
Gospel Books, Trinity College Library is the home for a large(
comprehensive, and often surprising collection of mediaeval and
renaissance manuscripts.
The second Section consists of a varied selection of manuscripts,
in four Parts.
A: MUSIC
The collection of musical manuscripts consists mainly of secular
music, although there are a few interesting pieces of ecclesiastical
music such as Thomas A Kempis
popular songs include works in French and Italian, as well as many
English pieces; Ms
may have belonged to James I.
B: LAW
A large proportion of the legal manuscripts deal with the con¬
stitutional problems of the 17th century which led up to the Civil
War (Mss
Brehon law tracts and one collection of Irish deeds dating from the
14th century.
C: HERALDRY
This collection of manuscripts
obsession with genealogy and family history. Most of the papers
document the arms and pedigrees of noble and gentle families in both
England and Ireland, and were written mainly to amuse the upper
classes.
D: GENERAL
This section covers a variety of subjects ranging from Mediaeval
Miscellanies to various accounts of tours made in Ireland and Europe
during the 18th century. There are a number of philosophical tracts
as well as the complete works of several individuals who bequeathed
their writings to the university.
