In this revised and expanded edition of the widely-used textbook for film history and
twentieth-century history, Anthony Aldgate and Jeffrey Richards bring up to date their
demonstration of how a close study of films in their historical and cultural settings
can promote fresh understanding of both cinema and historical events.
The films dealt with in detail and used as starting points for discussion have been
chosen because they represent particularly well subjects of interest to contemporary
historians such as empire and war, politics, class, crime, industrial relations,
education and sex. These films, including Sanders of the River, South Riding, A
Canterbury Tale, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Fame is the Spur, The Guinea
Pig, The
Ladykillers,
I m All Right Jack and If..., also highlight the concerns of the
period between
1929,
when sound films were introduced to Britain, and the
1990s.
This edition introduces three new chapters. One focuses on The Blue Lamp and
traces the changes in cinema s depiction of the police from that key
1949
film up to
the
1960s.
The second examines the British New Wave and centres on The
Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. The third starts with the film Scandal and
goes on to examine the retro fashion evident in films of the
1980s
and
1990s
like
Lei Him Have It, Dance with a Stranger and The Long Good Friday.
Also new to this edition is a useful Resources section for teachers, students,
scholars and enthusiasts.
Anthony Akbjate is Reader in Rim and History at the Open University. His numerous
publications on British cinema history include Censorship and the Permissive Society
and, with Jeffrey Richards, Britain Can Take It: The British Cinema in the Second
World War.
Jeffrey
Inchara»
is Professor of Cultural History at Lancaster University. He too has
published extensively in British cinema history, including Films and British National
Identify and The Unknown
1930s:
An Alternative History of the British Cinema,
1929-1939
(I.B.Tauris). He is General Editor of the Cinema and Society series.
