Everything you never knew you d know about someone you ll probably never meet Michael Renov 280 Index 292 This book emerges out of α moment in which the definition of autobiography is increasingly stretched across conceptual and disciplinary bounaries. Fascination with the micro, the specific, the idiosyncratic, characterises much of our cultural diet, and from this springs a number of pressing questions. Not least, and to paraphrase Meaghan Morris, is the problem of the banal, or of how to apply criteria of quality and utility to these accounts. Leading on from this interrogative is another pertinent issue concerning publicness; if the focus on micro narratives suits our present purview, what becomes of the macro, overarching narratives of explication? Central to these issues is the notion of experience. Cultural Studies has historically been a discipline where experience has occupied centre ground exploring the local, the subjective, the marginal. In the 1 980s narratives of the everyday became mired within the exchanges between post-structuralism and an identity politics, the latter cast as essentialist. Addressing this tension the authors return, in the Introduction, to Walter Benjamin s work, highlighting the inter-subjective and phenomenological nature of experience. Benjamin s obsessive fascination with the detail of cultural life attempts above all to keep definition on the move, to split open the categories of subject and object, experience and thought in a constant revisioning of the relationship between things. The essays in this collection are explorations of everyday practices as forms of autobiography, whether walking the streets of the city, using the internet, practising photography, clairvoyance, or collecting objects. The book is divided into four sections. The first explores the increased use of autobiography in academic work, as a crisis both of abstract theory as an explicatory device, and of the role of the intellectual more generally. The second and third sections take the axes of time and space as the determining feature of forms of autobiographical discourse. The final section considers the new forms of narrating the self offered by technologies.
