Albanian folk costumes of Albanian Prizren League period (1878-1881), placed at the per-
manent Ethnological Sector exhibition of the Albanian Prizren League, represent many
regions which actively participated in Albanian Prizren League movement, respectively
Albanian National Renaissance.
In this exhibition folk costumes which are completed in their structure and supplemented by
the accessories are considered (weapons and jewelers). Costumes of different sexes and
ages presented here: young and old men s costumes, young girl s costumes and young and
old women’s costumes. Costumes of all three religious confessions are presented: Moslem,
Catholic and Orthodox. In this way the massive participation of Albanian people in the
Albanian Prizren League Movement is characterized.
These samples belong to different types of Albanian costumes. Men s dressing is represen-
ted with the type of “fustanella” (quilted skirt) dressing, the type of “tirq” (wollen tight
trousers), the “brekesha” dressing as well as the “shallvare” dressing. Women’s type of
dressing is represented by the costume with “xhubleta ”, the costume will long shirt and one
and two aprons, and the costume with buggy trousers “dimi ”.
In the exhibition both town and village costumes are reflected, which were used for every-
day and special occasions. The majority of these belonged to the peasant costumes, while
town costumes were used only by high-class society. At the later ones save foreign elements
of the Byzantium and of the Oriental culture are reflected (can be seen) such as loose robes
“dollama ”, long gowns, buggy trousers ‘‘dimi ” etc.
As for the practical determined and adjustment function to life and season conditions, in the
exhibition are presented men s summer and winter clothes which at the same time were cat-
tle breeder and agricultural clothes. On the other hand civil status is presented by bride-
groom and bridal costumes etc.
These costumes survived many ancient Illyrian characteristics, that are easily recognized
from the used material mainly made from wool and leather and the form of ornamentation
dressing. Ornaments derive from ancient, has decorative function and often with the mean-

ing of ancient magic-apotropeic belief.
Nowadays usage and transformation of clothing that is presented here, have disappeared
from everyday usage in the beginning and by the end of XX-th century as a type of men’s
dressing from Southern Albania, women s dressing from Great Highlands, man s dressing
from Prizren and Ulqin etc. Women s dressing is still in use in many towns and villages, like
Mirdita, Hasi, The Plain of Dukagjin, Shestan and Ostros, wile other are used in wedding
and other parties, for example women’s dressing from Prizren, Ulqin etc. The type of dress-
ing with tight trousers “tirq ” rarely can be seen, exept for the old men. However some ele-
ments of “tirq ” and particularly with caps “qeleshe ” is used in combination with European
modern dressing. Even in the modified form it is used only by the old generation from Has,
Opoje, Rugove, Drenice, Reke, Macedonia etc. Some of the women s folk costumes are main-
ly used in the highland villages; near towns they have disappeared or substituted will ori-
ental and Europian type of dressing.
Albanian costumes in the Ethnological Sector of Albanian Prizren League, is e great help
for further studies about their antiquity, origin, genesis, types, arts, ornaments, chromatics
etc. This exhibition is undoubtedly a modest contribution for the complex study of Albanian
Prizren League and the recognition of material, social and spiritual culture of Albanian peo-
ple, in the very important period at its history.
