POSTMODERNIST AMERICAN WRITER

TABLE OF CONTENTS
1 Speaking the heretofore unspeakable 1
The story On Angels initially appears to be a medley of glittering, accidental material but
coheres over the course of 14 paragraphs into a meditation on the loss of centrality in
contemporary consciousness The story is a microcosm of Barthelme s creative dilemma as a
Postmodern fiction writer, and involves a major theme in his fiction and a key point in the
secondary thesis of the study
Next-generation Modernist? 21
Wilde argues that Barthelme is not a realist, but he himself insists that he is, that his fiction is a
way of dealing with reality He has positioned himself, Gass says, in the center of modem
consciousness, using everyday materials to make a treasure out of trash, to see out from inside
it, the world as it s faceted by colored jewelglass Barthelme says Joyce did this in various
ways and sees Finnegans Wake as collage One aim of the study is to show that Barthelme has
roots in a key pattern of Joyce s modernism but is able to bring it forward in a contemporary
context
3 Joyce as Postmodernist 47
The great Modernist story The Dead has parallels to Barthelme s novel Paradise and his final
short story Tickets Several passages of Finnegans Wake are analyzed here to illustrate what he
calls the effort of the artist to distance himself from the commonplace and to attain a fresh mode
of cognition
4 First novel: Snow White 71
Barthelme s first novel is examined to show him forging fictional values, and acknowledging
influences from architecture and painting Later, though, the novel became a burden for him, not
one of my favorites, he said in several published interviews
Putting Postmodernism in its place 95
John Gardner s attack on Postmodernist writers appears to mark a turning point for Barthelme in
his quest for a new fiction
Best novel: The Dead Father 131
The book was a critical success and achieved the fictional definition Barthehne had been striving
for from the 60s on: a meditation upon external reality and a meditation about the world It
can be seen to complete a cycle in his evolution as an artist With Gardner s disapprobation, a new
cycle begins
The swan songs 1 S3
The mellowing in Barthelme s artistic stance rounds out the study His later work has moved
toward center No longer is he in search of the new principle, sought by the angels in the first
chapter and, if anything, he s more concerned with accommodating the loss of centrality in
contemporary consciousness
