During the years between the end of the Wars of
Religion and the Revocation of the Edict of
Nantes, France s Huguenots enjoyed three
generations of relatively stable religious
toleration, even though they faced constant
solicitations to convert to Catholicism and an
erosion of their civil rights. These pioneering
essays explore fundamental questions about the
Huguenot community
-
the largest
Calvinist
minority in seventeenth-century Europe
-
during
the years when the Edict of Nantes defined the
terms of its existence.
Benedia s
essays delve deeply into untapped
archival materials and use methods drawn from
horizons as varied as historical demography, the
history of the book and the history of mentalities.
How did this minority evolve numerically and
sociologically in the race of the constant pressure
to convert? What was the nature of Huguenot
identity? Was Huguenot religiosity in line with
Calvinist
piety elsewhere in Europe? How did
these Protestants get along with their Catholic
neighbours? These questions all receive fresh,
detailed answers. Taken together, the essays set
the history of seventeenth-century French
Protestantism on a firm new footing. At the same
time, they illuminate such larger issues of the long
Reformation era as Calvinism and the growth of
capitalism, the Reformation and print culture,
Protestantism and the visual arts, the history of
toleration and the advance of confessional-
ization .
Philip Benedict is Professor of History at
Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. His
