Frederic
Auguste
Bartholdi created New York's best
known icon, "Liberty Enlightening the World." It
was engineered by
Gustave
Eiffel, transported from
France, and assembled on Bedloes Island
(renamed Liberty Island in
1956).
The statue was dedicated on October
28, 1886.
A plaque fixed to the base of the statue in
1903
bears a poem written in
1883
by Emma Lazarus.
The final and most famous lines read:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
