Influence inThird Language Acquisition is a response to the increasing
interest in the field of multilingual acquisition and multilingualism.The study of third
language acquisition brings together second language acquisition and bilingualism,
two areas of research in applied linguistics which have traditionally ignored each
other. This volume focuses on psycholinguistic aspects of language transfer when
three languages are in contact, and provides an overview of the state of the art in
cross-linguistic influence in third language acquisition. It contains both studies of
language acquisition and language processing when speakers are faced with the task
of performing in a third language.The language combinations include, for example,
English-German-Swedish; Dutch-French-English; Finnish-Swedish-English; Basque-
Spanish-English or Japanese-Korean-English. The volume explores different
psychological aspects of cross-linguistic influence such as the effect of
psychotypology, the organisation of the mental lexicon or tip of the tongue
phenomena, and highlights the specific role of the second language in third language
production.
Cross-linguistic Influence in Third Language Acquisition will be of interest to
researchers working in the fields of second and third language acquisition and
bi/multilingualism and also to other professionals interested in language processing
and language learning.
The ten articles that constitute this volume represent a substantial contribution to a
rapidly developing field. It has often been commented that much of linguistics is based
on monolingual assumptions. But contact linguistics itself largely assumes that there
are two languages in contact. This book uses psycholinguistic perspectives and
models, sometimes complemented by linguistic and sociolinguistic ones, to explore
the nature and direction of cross-linguistic influences. In view of the widespread
acquisition of English by those who are already bilingual or are also acquiring a
regional lingua franca, this book will further the current discussion on languages and
language learning in Europe and beyond, as well as the understanding of plurilingual
speech processing.

Britta Hufeisen
is Director of the Language Resource Center attheTechnical University of Darmstadt,
Germany, and Adjunct Professor with the Department of Linguistics at the University
of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. She has published in the fields of third language
acquisition and
rnuîtilingualism.
Ulrike Jessner
has published on psycholinguistic
issues in ths fields of first and second language acquisition, multilinguatism and
gender issues. Recently she has co-edited the book
English in Europe and is co-author of A Dynamic Model
of Muitfltnguafism. She is Associate Professor of English
Linguistics at the University of Innsbruck, Austria.
