The Illuminating Mind in American
Photography looks at the ideas, images
and lives of four major twentieth century
American photographers: Alfred
Stieglitz
(1864-1946),
Paul Strand
(1890-1976),
Edward Weston
(1886-1958),
and Ansel
Adams
(1902-1984).
Thanks largely to
these four individuals, Americans came to
accept photography as a fine art. When
Stieglitz
began working in the 1880's,
photography had a tenuous art status, but
by the time of Adams's death a century
later, museums, galleries, and the public
agreed that the best photography possesses
the seriousness, creativity, and market value
of other visual arts. This book examines the
lives of these four photographers within the
larger cultural context of their times, tracing
not only their contributions to American
modernism, but also their struggles with
epistemological and representational ques¬
tions that occupied a host of diverse thinkers.
They were all interested in the relation¬
ships between the artist and his subject, the
knower and the known, the mind and its
objects. For them, photography was not just
a passive transcription of the outer world;
it was an exploratory process in which the
artist searched for and probed his subject.
The Illuminating Mind unearths archival
manuscripts and forgotten publications, and
reveals unrecognized psychological intricacies
to these men as they progressed through
their careers. It is a kind of comparative
biography, showing the interrelationships
of their lives as well as their shared themes
and experiences.
