Seven key principles for changing health behavior are presented to bol¬
ster the key support systems of children such as the family and schools
in their efforts to accomplish primary prevention of violence. These
principles are illustrated by examples of actual interventions in place
around the nation.

Family violence—including domestic and intimate partner abuse, child
and adolescent physical and sexual abuse, and elder abuse—is a major

Perpetrator issues involved with sexual violence are addressed and

recommendations for dealing with the sexually violent perpetrator are

8. Treating Traumatized Patients and Victims of Violence 79
Richard P. Kluft, Sandra L. Bloom, J. David Kinzie
A comprehensive, concise discussion is given of all aspects of treating
traumatized patients and victims of violence. These include the eco¬
nomics of violence, the epidemiology of trauma, the gamut of the
trauma response, the elements of trauma, psychiatric and physical
comorbidity, the initial evaluation, general and stage orientation to
treatment, memory, the stance of the therapist, principles of good treat¬
ment, hospitalization, modalities of treatment, and psychopharmacol
ogy. Recommendations on how the mental health profession can best
address this major portion of our work are presented.
