BLACKFEET AND BUFFALO During his long life, James Willard Schultz wrote thirty-eight books that were widely read among admirers of western life and history. Now, for a whole new generation of readers, here is a new collection of his stories. A fur trader from 1878 to 1904, Schultz married a Pikuni (Blackfoot) woman, became a member of the tribe, and was given the Blackfoot name Apikuni. With the disappearance of the Buffalo, adjustment to the new way of life was as difficult for Schultz as for his Blackfeet. He took to the mountains, hunted game, explored the eastern slope of the Rockies, and guided other hunters and explorers, including George Bird Grinnell, the Baring brothers, and Ralph Pulitzer. Mountains, glaciers, and lakes were named by him; the mountain goat was identi fied; and through his and Grinnell’s efforts the northern portion of the American Rockies was set apart as Glacier National Park. At the time of his death in 1947, Schultz was engaged in collecting the materials that his wife later arranged for this volume, a book of memories and adventures from the old Montana of the eighties. She also added a collection of several of the best of his previously published stories. The result is perhaps Schultz’s best book because it is the most personal. In it, he emulates the Indians’ way of telling tales: vivid action interspersed with dramatic dialogue. There is historical and social value, too, in the accounts of intertribal conflict, of differences between the government and the Blackfeet, and of Indian religious beliefs and observances. Few writers of any age
have been so successful in por traying the thoughts and feelings of another race. In this book Apikuni brings to life an era and even a people now almost forgotten.
