Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency
Virus 971
A. Michelle Willis
Feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus are fre¬
quently associated with multisystemic disease in cats. Clinical
disease involving the eye and periorbital tissues can present in a
variety of forms in the cat infected with feline leukemia virus or
feline immunodeficiency virus. Tissue damage may occur because
of direct viral effects, or the virus may predispose the ocular
tissues to secondary infections or neoplastic transformation due
to immunomodulation. The ocular manifestations of both viral
infections are reviewed.
Feline Infectious Peritonitis 987
Stacy E. Andrew
Feline infectious peritonitis (F1P) occurs most frequently in young
animals from multicat households. Ocular manifestations of FIP
are extremely common with the noneffusive form of the disease.
All cats suspected of having FIP should undergo a thorough
ophthalmic examination. Uveitis (inflammation of the iris, ciliary
body, and choroid) is the primary clinical sign of ocular III .
Treatment with anti inflammatory medications is only supportive
and aimed at disease palliation.
Feline Herpesvirus 1001
Jean Stiles
Feline herpesvirus infection is one of the most common clinical
diseases affecting cats. Although most kittens recover from pri

mary herpesvirus infection, activation of latent virus and the
associated disease it causes is often seen in the older cat. Ocular
lesions are a frequent manifestation of recurrence. Herpesvirus
ocular disease in the cat offers both a diagnostic and a therapeutic
challenge to the clinician. This article reviews clinical signs associ¬
ated with feline herpesvirus infection, available diagnostic tests,
and therapeutic options.
Feline Chlamydia and Calicivirus Infections 1015
David T. Ramsey
Conjunctivitis attributable to Chlamydia psittaci is a common oc¬
currence in cats, whereas conjunctivitis attributable to feline cali¬
civirus is rare. Bilateral conjunctivitis is the most common mani¬
festation of C. psittaci in cats. Although conjunctivitis has been
reported in cats infected with calicivirus, ocular signs are the least
frequent of all clinical signs in cats. When the clinical signs of C.
psittaci infection are limited only to the conjunctiva, it is seldom
possible to distinguish conjunctivitis caused by C. psittaci from
conjunctivitis caused by other infectious pathogens (feline herpes
virus 1, feline calicivirus, Mycoplasma felis) based exclusively on
the clinical appearance of the conjunctivitis. Diagnostic and thera¬
peutic strategies are presented.
Feline Systemic Fungal Infections 1029
Juliet R. Gionfriddo
Although systemic mycotic diseases are uncommon in cats, they
are important diagnostic differential considerations in sick cats,
especially in those with uveitis. This article reviews the available
literature on disseminated fungal infections in cats and concen¬
trates on the ocular manifestations of these diseases. Pathogene
sis, diagnostics, and therapy for cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis,
blastomycosis, coccidiomycosis, aspergillosis, and candidiasis are
emphasized.
Toxoplasmosis 1051
Michael G. Davidson
Toxoplasma gondii is a potential cause of anterior uveitis, posterior
uveitis, or retinitis in a number of animal species, most commonly
the cat. Chorioretinitis is often seen in cats with evidence of
generalized toxoplasmosis. Additionally, T. gondii has been in¬
criminated in many cases of idiopathic anterior uveitis in cats,
although this is a controversial issue and the parasite may be
capable of inciting an immune mediated inflammation in ocular
tissues. Despite recent advances in diagnostic techniques and
new antiprotozoal pharmacologic agents, ocular toxoplasmosis
remains a difficult disease to diagnose and treat.

Canine Systemic Fungal Infections 1063
Sheryl Greve Krohne
This article features diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of natu¬
rally occurring systemic fungal infections that affect the eye in
dogs. The most common systemic signs and the most reliable
diagnostic techniques for differentiating these diseases from other
systemic diseases are stressed. The ocular involvement is de¬
scribed and illustrated with multiple figures.
Canine Protothecosis 1091
Steven R. Hollingsworth
Protothecosis manifests itself differently in various species. In
the dog, it causes disseminated disease that affects many organ
systems, and it is most frequently manifested by chronic diarrhea
and acute onset of blindness. Although there has been limited
success treating protothecosis in other species, it remains a fatal
disease in dogs. This article presents an overview of the history
of protothecosis, consideration of the possible routes of infection,
the clinical signs in species commonly affected, diagnostic proce¬
dures, and treatment options. Special emphasis is given to the
underlying pathologic basis of the ocular signs in the dog.
Canine Systemic Bacterial Infections 1103
Joan Dziezyc
This article covers three bacterial diseases of the dog that are
proven or suspected to cause ocular disease, usually uveitis.
These diseases are leptospirosis, brucellosis, and Lyme borreliosis.
Uveitis has been well documented in cases of brucellosis. Uveitis
can probably be seen with both acute and chronic leptospirosis
in dogs and is suspected in cases of Lyme borreliosis.
Canine Viral Infections 1119
A. Michelle Willis
The widespread practice of routine vaccination has greatly re¬
duced the incidence of morbidity and mortality secondary to
viral infection in the domestic canine population. Several viral
infections of dogs may be implicated in both acute and chronic
multisystemic disease processes, and the ocular manifestations
associated with certain viral infections may be inconspicuous
or profound. Susceptible animals include neonatal puppies with
immature immune systems and immunocompromised adults that
fail to mount an appropriate immune response to viral challenge.
Ocular tissues can be damaged directly by intracellular viral
replication or by the inflammatory effects of the associated cell
mediated or humoral immune response to viral infection. Addi¬
tionally, the eye can be affected by adverse immunologic

responses that occur with some modified live viral vaccine
products.
Canine Rickettsial Infections 1135
Jean Stiles
Rickettsial infections in dogs are common wherever exposure to
ticks is moderate to high. Clinical signs may vary greatly from
dog to dog, and clinicians must have an index of suspicion of
rickettsial infection to make the diagnosis. This article reviews
presenting clinical signs of various ehrlichiosis agents and Rocky
Mountain spotted fever, appropriate diagnostic tests, and sys¬
temic and ocular therapy.
Canine and Feline Primary Ocular Bacterial Infections 1151
R. David Whitley
Primary ocular bacterial infections are associated with corneal,
conjunctival, and eyelid diseases. Bacteria may be associated with
infection of the nasolacrimal drainage apparatus and with intra¬
ocular infection occurring after penetrating injury or surgery.
