This ambitious series offers wide-ranging studies of specific wars, and distinct
phases of warfare, from the close of the Middle Ages to the present day. It aims
to advance the current integration of military’ history into the academic
mainstream. To that end. the books are not merely traditional campaign
narratives, but examine the causes, course and consequences of major
conflicts, in their full international, political, diplomatic, social and ideological
contexts.
By describing the Vietnam War as a ‘noble cause during his 1980 presidential
campaign, Ronald Reagan demonstrated just how emotive the war and defeat are for
the American people. By attempting to re-shape the past, Reagan alienated many
people, but delighted a sufficient number to bolster his chances of success. His tactic
demonstrated that Vietnam is not just a war, but an idea which is moulded by cranks
and demagogues to suit their political imperative, The war has become a morality
tale through which to peddle a particular vision of America.
The struggle for understanding and closure has resulted in a vast outpouring of
literature. But the scholarship on the war is often too slanted or too finely focused to
be of much use to the student who seeks understanding of why the war was fought,
how it w as lost, and what effect it has had. What has resulted from this frenetic
search is a great deal of evidence and a deep collective knowledge, but an incomplete
understanding of the w ar.
The military events, the political and strategic contexts, and the social and cultural
impact of the Vietnam War are all brought together into this single compelling and
readable volume. As well as breadth and incisiveness, it has new things to say on the
nature of the communist revolution and the way of war; the flaws in US strategy and
tactics, and how these affected the soldier on the ground; and the legacy of the war
for Vietnam and America alike.
I’he book offers a clear-eyed treatment of themes often masked by myth or political
posturing. Analytical, but with a strong narrative drive, deploying a wealth of
primary quotation and previously unpublished material, and written with energy and
insight, this is a book that deserves a central place even in this crowded field.
