Summary
That one who was to signify for the people of this Country “THE HERO OF
MArA$E$TT that one who succcded to defeat the front breaker feme of haughty marshal
von Machcnsen, general EREMfA GRK30RESCU was homed at November, 2» , 1863, in a
modest teacher’s family from Tirgti Bujor.
As the other great commander, general Alexandra Avcrescu, who’s contemporary
and close friend he was, Eremia Giigorescu knew from early childhood live hardness, those
burdens that made him outline his own fete.
Between 1870-1878 he attended the school in Galafi and he had a teacher named
Râçcanu who knew how to guide the first steps of the youngest pupil of the classroom.
Attached by his first teacher, Eremia Grigorcscu was to declare later: “He teached me how to
learn and how to be a fine person**.
He attended then the well-nown Mïhâtîeanà Academy” in la$i as a state stipended
student. It’s here where he knew all die privations of the boarding school but also those
charming friendships between pupils with same age and concerning. He was noticed for his
sense of order, discipline and competence that brought him indisputable moral authority over
his schoolmates and the best appreciation’s of his teachers.
In the Summer of 1882 he passed the school - leaving examination at Ia$i
University. He was examined by a commission with a lot of remarkable personalities: PJPon.
C.Erbiceanu, X.Gheorghiu, A.D.Xenopol, C.Dumitrescu. Nothing that was to come. To add it
more, he enlist for the Science and Medicine Colleges of the Ia$i University.
In the visits he payed to the family of Elena (his next wife) he was attracted by the
military history values. Those visits changed his fete and the student in Science and Medicine
left the University for the Military School m Bucharest, artillery branch.
He hardly and boldly worked and studied for two years (1882-1884), succeeding to
be noticed for his qualities. On 1884, September, the 25* he graduated The Infantry and
Cavalry Military School, artillery branch. He got die best mark and was classified 3rd out of 87
graduates, being promoted to second lieutenant.
The secretary of State for Defence appreciated his brilliant results, so he sent die
young second lieutenant Eremia Grigorescu to Paris, as a military attaché to the French
Artillery Committee “Saint Thomas**.
He fully took advantage of the University studies and knowledge s he got at the
French Artillery Training Center, so in 1888 he wrote “The probabilities calculation - on
application to the cannons**, being the first Romanian officer that tried to apply Superior
mathematics in weapon’s study.
On 1894 he was sent to Köln to check on delivery the gun power that was ordered
to the Traisdorf factory. He knew such a factory was also to be built in Romania so he tried to
learn the secrets of die powder production.
On 1899, April, the 24* he was promoted to Major and was decorated with
“Romania’s Star” order for the outstanding discharge of his Sorties Between 1899 and 1900
he continued to improve his knowledge’s in artillery and while being the Chief of Dude$ti
powder factory he wrote “The ballistic study of the 1893 model cannon**. As the Headmaster
of the “Navy, Engineer and Artillery Military School” he insisted of the applicative side of the
problems.
Noticing his qualities, the firmness and abnegation, The Secretary of State Tor
Defence appointed Colonel Eremia Grigorcscu as a Personnel Chief on 1910 On 1915 he was

promoted to a Brigade General and was appointed the Commander of the 14th Infantry
Division at la$i.
He was sure Romania was to fight the First World War so he tried to study and
exploit the Division’s responsibility area and to make it well known to all his officers and
soldiers.
He was then appointed the Commander of the 15* Division and participated to the
battles in Dobruja on august and September 1916. He was immediately transfered with his
Division on the Carpathians and participated to the first battle of Oituz (October, 1916) With
ait and vigour General Eremia Grigorescu personally led the battle, facing the rain of shells
together with his brave officers and soldiers. The enemy did not succeed to carry out his
important strategic goal - breaking through the mountains to the South Moldavia - a goal he
was bleeding for more than two weeks.
The 15* Division and its brave Commander restlessly remained on the battle field
to fight that positional war with its trench eventful life full of uncertainty and dangers.
The success of the 2* d Romanian Army s offensive at Márá$ti determined
significant changing in the campaign plans of both belligerents and also military equipment
and soldiers were brought in Foc$ani and Oriental Carpathians areas.
The battle from Márá§e$ti was compared with those from Mama or Verdun, and
became the most glorious battle Romanian Army fought in First World War.
With a hawk eye and an overflowing energy General Eremia Grigorescu took those
measures that made it possible for him to oppose an active and determined resistance that
shattered von Mackensen’s front breaker myth The bravery of the 1st Romanian Army
soldiers and their famous commander. General Eremia Grigorescu, was admired by all the
people of die country.
On 1918, February, 12th he was given “Michael The Brave’* order, first class, ‘Tot
his bravery and efficiency showed at Márá$c$tñ when he succeded to Stop enemy s
offensive .
In Ia$i University lecture room, in front of a large auditorium of officers and
teachers his former teachers gave him a sword of honour as an acknowledgement of is military
merits.
Since 1919 General Eremia Grigorescu was buried in the Mausoleum, guarded by
his brave soldiers that shattered with blood and death the fame of a invincible army
