n Dusán Makavejev’s controversial and explicit WR -֊Mysteries offhę I Organism (1971), ‘WR’ is Wilhelm Reich, maverick intellectual, sexual pioneer and theorist of ‘Oťgone energy’, but also ‘world revolution’. WR stages an encounter between psychotherapy and Marxism, sexual , permissiveness and socialism. Juxtaposing hippie America, and cold war. Yugoslavia, it’s a fildi of ideas and sensations which speaks urgently to the Contemporary World. - , Raymond Durghat thinks that WR is an adventure playgrouncf/a.‘jungle gym’ which the film’s spectators entenand inteşacţ with. It’s intellectual ֊cinema, and a film which prophesied the horrorai фе conflict and slaughter in what is now the former Yugoslavia. , Raymond՝ Durgnàt is oije of ։ Britain’s foremost writers on film. Among hiš books are Eros irt the Cinema (1966), Films and Feelings, (1967), Sexual ՀAlienation in the Cirtema (1972»), The Strange Case ofAlfred Hitchcock (1974), and Durgnat on Film ( 1976). He,is currently Visiting Professor at the ՛ University of East London. Rarely has one witnessed such a corribination of the immanent formal analysis Of a film, its incorporation into the history of cinema; and a detailed depiction of its socio-political context.
