Conjuring up images of disused canals filled with old shopping trolleys, or derelict building
plots infested with fly-tipped refuse, habitats in urban areas are commonly thought to be of
little value to nature conservation. Yet our towns and cities contain sites which feature a
wide variety of plants and animals. Some of these habitats are remnants of rural sites
encompassed by urban sprawl, while others are uniquely urban in nature. Irrespective of
their origin, many urban habitats provide interesting places for nature-watching and serious
ecological study.
Urban Habitats presents an illustrated and practical guide to the wide range of urban
habitats and the flora and fauna which live within them, and examines the most important
conservation and management issues faced within our towns and cities.
Following an explanation of the nature of urban habitats, the range of habitat types and
typical plants and animals are described in detail. Topics of concern to the conservationist or
habitat manager are explored: the impacts and monitoring of pollution; the effects of inva-
sive species; and guidelines for the ecological management of sites to enhance their nature
conservation value. A series of case studies illustrate the pressures on some major urban
habitat types, and the opportunities to enhance them for nature conservation.
