Wild, empty, bleak, desolate, hostile - a wide range of adjectives are used to describe upland
habitats yet each picks up on particular features of upland environments that are a con-
sequence of the absence of cultivation, the topography and the climate. Uplands cover
almost a third of Britain’s land surface, encompassing habitats as diverse as the granite tors
on Dartmoor, the eroded peat plateau of Kinder Scout in Derbyshire, and the arctic-like
plateau of Ben MacDui in Scotland. Yet despite obvious differences, each is recognizable as
an upland environment sharing important characteristics which include the absence of
human intrusion through buildings, boundaries and roads. Upland habitats are the closest
we can get to wilderness in Britain.
Upland Habitats presents a comprehensive, illustrated guide to the habitat types, flora,
fauna and conservation and management issues of Britain’s major wilderness areas
including blanket bogs, heather moors, sheep walk and deer forest, and montane and
sub-montane habitats. The plants and animals found in such habitats are described, and
illustrated with line drawings and photographs.
Examining the unique characteristics of scale, ‘naturalness’ and strong environment
gradients of upland environments, this book explores a wide range of ecological pro-
cesses, including: distribution patterns, adaptation, population and community dynamics.
Tracing important historical events that have shaped upland habitats since the end of the
last glaciation, the authors focus particularly on important conservation and management
issues for the ecology and survival of British uplands as we enter the next millennium.
Modern agricultural practices and economics, habitat degradation through overgrazing,
commercial afforestation, recreation and persecution of wildlife, the funding of upland
farming and the complex conservation-related statutes imposed to control current upland
land use, are all discussed and case studies selected to highlight the issues.
Wilderness does not disappear overnight but by the time the decline in upland habitats
becomes a recognized problem, it may be too late to reclaim these wild, open landscapes.
