| adam_text | This book draws together extracts from writing about madness between the late seventeenth and the early
nineteenth centuries, a period that saw a general decline in religious explanations for insanity and a
corresponding advance in the professionalisation of psychiatry. At the same time, increasing numbers
of lay individuals, from the privately deranged to the imputedly mad, wrote and published accounts of
their experiences, both as sufferers from mental and physical pain and as recipients of medical and
social attention.
Patterns qfMadness in the Eighteenth Century attempts the reconstruction of the dialogue between
religion, science and suffering, or the reconstruction of the lost opportunity for dialogue. Aimed at
students of cultural and social history, of literature, and of the history of medicine—as well as at general
readers with interests in these fields—the book presents generous selections from writing on all sides of
the insanity debate, together
annotation. Some of the writers included are welUmown in their own right: Johnson, Boswell, Blake,
Coleridge. Some, like William Battie and Samuel
represent forceful religious or medical positions. Many come from obscurity, or semi-obscurity, to write
about their own lives and feelings—Hannah Allen, Samuel Brackshaw, Urbane Metcalf—or to feature as
anonymous voices in physicians case notes. All of them, however, make distinctive contributions to the
pattern that constitutes the history of insanity in the eighteenth century.
