A BRIEF INTELLECTUAL AND ACADEMIC HISTORY OF

TALKING PEACE, WAGING WAR: MINING THE LANGUAGE OF
LEADERSHIP 1
This paper argues for a multidisciplinary perspective to understand recent
failures of peacemaking among world leaders It explores the contested terrain
of discourse surrounding decisions for armed conflict such as the 1991 Gulf
War We begin by examining the potential of discourse analysis to illuminate
policy statements in press conferences and written text To some extent, the
contested territory within discourse categories is analogous to the territory
over which lives were lost, but discourse analysis can take us only so far down
the road to Baghdad We turn to Baudrillard s critical theory to further explore
textual conflicts that claim to talk peace, but serve as the virtual waging of
war We argue finally that for peace to supplant war, peacemakers must
demand a different representational system

BETWEEN AUTONOMY AND AFFILIATION: BERNADETTE DEVLIN
MCALISKEY, THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, AND THE IRISH
PEACE PROCESS 19
This article examines the role of intellectuals within national liberations
struggles by focusing on the writings of Bernadette Devlin McAIiskey Once
the most prominent icon of the struggle for civil rights in Northern Ireland,
McAIiskey now plays the crucial role of offering critiques of the on-going
negotiations for peace in Ireland Unaffiliated with any political party,
McAIiskey works to see that grassroots issues—housing, education, and
especially the rights of prisoners—-are included in discussions of political
transformations on the island

THE POLITICS OF LANGUAGE, LEADERSHIP, AND IDENTITY IN
SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA 33
This essay explores an important historical discontinuity in the relationships
between political language and political leadership in sub-Saharan Africa
since most African countries achieved political independence These
discontinuities have undermined the legitimacy and efficacy of both political
language and political leadership to the detriment of political identity in sub-
Saharan Africa The essay suggests an approach to a more beneficial dialogue
between political language and political leadership, thereby advancing the
quest for African political identity

THE MAORI HAKA AS A CONTEMPORARY EXPRESSION OF
POLITICAL PROTEST 48
The author showcases two contemporary Maori haka with accompanying
translations, and argues that they function as avenues for expressions of
leadership in giving voice to individual, tribal, and national unrest over
oppressive colonial and subsequent governmental treatment of an ethnic
minority He argues that the nature and function of the haka invite a rethinking
of the traditional western viewpoint of leadership
Dina Rudolph Yoshimi
CREATING A VOICE OF STUDENT AUTHORITY IN THE CONTEXT
OF JAPANESE GRADUATE EDUCATION 59
The author construes graduate education as a form of apprenticeship, and
conducts a microanalysis of a thesis advising session to demonstrate the ways
in which professor and student cooperatively and interactively negotiate their
vertically-organized social relationship to facilitate student acquisition of the
voices of disciplinary authority
Carol Myers-Scotton
CALCULATING SPEAKERS: RATIONAL ACTOR MODELS AND
LINGUISTIC CHOICES 76
The author argues that rationality is both the mechanism and explanation for
choices that speakers make to use one style or one language rather than
another Making a rational choice means that speakers select the variety that
enhances rewards and minimizes costs in line with their goals The essay
exemplifies how rationality explains alternations in codes witching,-the use of
two languages in the same conversation

A BILINGUAL PERSPECTIVE ON INTERLANGUAGE
PRAGMATICS 89
This essay examines the practice of adopting a native speaker norm in
research on interlanguage pragmatics, the study of nonnative speakers use
and development of pragmatic knowledge in a second language For many
research purposes, nonnative speakers use of the target language needs to be
assessed against some sort of standard In second language pedagogy, learning
goals have to be defined While there is thus no denying that a norm of some
kind is often required, the essay calls into question the taken-for-granted
assumption that the appropriate norm is native speakers pragmatic knowledge
and performance After briefly considering how linguistic agents are
conceptualized in formal linguistics, second language acquisition, and studies
of bilingualism, I examine how second language users are constructed in
second language studies of speech act realization, discourse management, and
communication strategies Drawing on studies of bilingual and multilingual
speakers, I suggest that the pragmatic knowledge and action patterns of
competent bilinguals provide a more valid standard for comparison

IS ENGLISH THE LANGUAGE OF INTERNATIONAL
LEADERSHIP? 109
This paper examines the current position of English use around the world The
claim is made that leaders must learn to expect, not fear, differences in
conventions of communication when using English in international contexts
because Englishes are the languages of international leadership
Jung-Soon Shim
MULTIPLE VOICES AND TRANSFORMATIVE VISIONS: IMAGES OF
WOMEN IN KOREAN WOMEN S DRAMA SINCE THE 1950 S 115
This essay examines how female Korean playwrights in modern times have
come to establish women s writing traditions collectively, and what
characterize their feminisms It reveals that their visions for social change
embrace a curious alliance between the respect for patriarchal family values
and the pursuit of self-realization

LOUSY LANGUAGE OR A SPECIAL KIND OF ENGLISH?: THE
ABSENCE OF A UNIFYING VOICE IN ANNA DEAVERE SMITH S
FIRES IN THE MIRROR AND TWILIGHT: LOS ANGELES, 1992 125
This essay compares the published text of Fires in the Mirror with the PBS
film version, and compares the published text of Twilight with the New York
stage production in order to determine the role Deavere Smith assigns to
viii Contents
language in racial conflict I argue that, as Deavere Smith refined and revised
these works in progress, the trajectory of the earlier play moves toward
greater skepticism about the ability of language to reconcile opposing
viewpoints on race, while the trajectory of the later play moves toward a more
positive appreciation of language s power to deepen the inquiry into American
race relations
Mary Harvan
REPRESENTING OGONI: KEN SARO-WIWA, THE OGONI
MOVEMENT, AND LANGUAGE AS RESISTANCE 136
This article argues that the Ogoni people have used linguistic creativity to
resist their economic and political oppression within Nigeria It examines
particularly the published work of the late spokesperson of the Ogoni
movement, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and terms coined and events staged in order to
advance the movement
