Knowledge of the embryology and anatomy of the maxillary sinus is
essential to understand its normal function and to detect diseases that
involve this region as well as adjacent structures. This article reviews
the embryology and anatomy of the maxillary sinus and its anatomic
relationships, with emphasis on the clinical application of this information.

membranes, oxygenation, obstruction, and effects of dental procedures is
reviewed. Understanding the effects of surgical intervention and disease

The bacteriology of the maxillary sinus is reviewed. Current trends in
antimicrobial resistance among the bacteria commonly associated with
sinusitis are described. The role of other microbes is discussed, including
viruses, fungi, mycobacteria, and parasites. Finally, the microbiology of
the maxillary sinus is summarized by listing the microbes most likely to
be found in different categories of patients.

and a careful physical evaluation. The physical examination should be

of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The radiographic evaluation of the maxillary sinuses includes plain film
exams, panoramic radiographs, CT, 3D CT, Dentascan, and MR imaging.
The techniques and indications for each modality is presented as well as
the normal radiographic anatomy. Various pathological entities that affect
the maxillary sinus are presented with emphasis on their imaging appear¬
ance. Discussion includes congenital anomalies, infection and inflamma¬
tion, trauma, benign and malignant neoplasms and fibroosseous lesions as
well as a brief review of the more common odontogenic cysts and tumors.

each entity. Classification schemes are also presented for carcinomas and

This article focuses on disease processes of infectious, inflammatory, and
osseous character that do not lend themselves easily to inclusion in the
other categories. Aspergillus, mucormycosis infections, and Wegener gran
ulomatosis are discussed. Four osseous abnormalities; osteoblastic osteitis,
lytic osteitis, osteoma, and fibrous dysplasia are also covered.
