This article defines communication and describes its various dis¬
orders. Some of these disorders are associated with other DSM
IV conditions, such as mental retardation or pervasive develop¬
mental disorder. Others are specific to the language learning
process. The interactions between communication and psychiatric
disorders are discussed. Suggestions for integrating treating ap¬
proaches among communication disorders and mental health pro¬
fessionals are presented.

The co occurrence of psychiatric and communication disorders in
children is considerable. Many children who are treated by mental
health professionals are also in need of speech and language
services. This article discusses comorbidity and outlines commu¬
nication problems that accompany a variety of childhood psychi¬
atric conditions. Empiric studies and clinical impressions of these
co occurring problems are described.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is reviewed from
the perspective of speech language pathology, and various char¬
acteristics of the communicative process that co occur with
ADHD are presented. Incorporating Barkley s inhibition model
with a systems theory approach and a functionality component,
implications for service delivery and intervention are discussed.
Five specific types of interventions are presented to encourage
collaboration.

This article examines the communication styles of children with
mental retardation, emphasizing the assessment and intervention
protocols used by health and education professionals. This article
highlights the following approaches: a developmental psycholin
guistic orientation, a pragmatics approach, and a supportive inter¬
dependent format consistent with the 1992 revision of how mental
retardation is classified. This article discusses children with men¬
tal retardation who show challenging and disruptive behavior.

An introduction to augmentative and alternative communication
(AAC) systems for children and adolescents with severe spoken
language disorders is presented. Significant advances have been
made in assessment and intervention approaches over the last
decade. Children with severe disabilities who employ AAC sys¬
tems can demonstrate communication achievements that exceed
traditional expectations.

The goal of this article is to inform and educate those who
work with children who present with language learning disorders
about phonologic processing deficits, because this area has been
shown to have a significant impact on children and adults who
exhibit reading disabilities. Mental health professionals who work

with children with reading problems need to be aware of what is
known about this source of reading disorders and the implica¬
tions of this knowledge for prevention and treatment. Advocating
for appropriate instruction for children with reading problems is
an important role mental health professionals can play in working
with this population.

This article presents issues related to the communication assess¬
ment of children with psychiatric and communication disorders.
Challenges inherent in assessing this population are discussed.
Frequently used assessment instruments and procedures are de¬
scribed. Consideration is given to the assessment of very young
or low functioning children and older or high functioning chil¬
dren.
Communicative Intervention for Children with
Psychiatric and Communication Disorders 137

This article describes language intervention for children with
psychiatrically based communication disorders. It begins with an
overview of the language intervention process as it applies across
the range of childhood language disorders. Characteristic lan¬
guage and communication patterns exhibited by children with
social emotional disorders are then reviewed, followed by a dis¬
cussion of particular issues that require consideration for effective
treatment planning and programming with this pediatric popula¬
tion. Specific therapy procedures are provided to illustrate strate¬
gies employed by speech language pathologists as part of a multi
disciplinary team effort to facilitate the acquisition of functional
and socially appropriate communication skills.

This article defines family centered practice and its application
to the assessment and intervention process for children with
communication disorders. This article addresses issues of the
relationship between communication development and develop¬
ment of mental health, as well as the impact of poverty on
these areas. Specific examples of family centered assessment and
intervention procedures are provided. The role of the family as
agents in literacy development in preparing their children for
school is discussed. Suggestions for areas for and types of collabo

A Case Study in Communication Disorders 175

Often, children with language disorders exhibit other more subtle
delays or deviance in social, communicative, and cognitive devel¬
opment. By focusing on these three areas, the clinician can under¬
stand the developmental context in which the language delay
manifests. This approach includes the following: gathering infor¬
mation, psychological and communicative examinations, psychi¬
atric examination, and medical evaluation.
Multiplex Developmental Disorders: The Role of
Communication in the Construction of a Self 189

This article discusses the integration of various aspects of the
child s development, particularly the development of language
and communication and the way in which these developments
interact to enable the child to construct a coherent sense of self.
Multiplex developmental disorder is presented as an example of
a disorder that affects several of these crucial strands of develop¬
ment. Recent research and controversies regarding the diagnostic
descriptions of multiplex and other pervasive developmental dis¬
orders are presented. This discussion is used to illustrate the
ways in which such disorders affect not only the individual
aspects of development, but the child s ability to form a cohesive
sense of self. The implications of these difficulties in self defini¬
tion for treating children with disorders that affect a variety of
aspects of development are also discussed.
