And once again
a canoe s made ready
for dangerous passage
beyond Unanu s seas
beyond safety: where
we must pay with our lives
for using other men s sea routes
unless we render fine tribute
New Navigator, Rongerhik
looks over his crew:
one wild man
for courage
one tame man -
for caution
one patient man
for perseverance
one diviner with sacred skills
(sufficient for most perils)
for safety
one handy man
(massager, carpenter, doctor, priest)
for all other needs
From Song of Olap: fragment of a
navigational chant by Bill Peck
We chose this quote (from a poem based on a trad
itional Ittang chant from Chuuk) because it fits our
metaphor of writing the book as a voyage on a sea
canoe In our quest we sometimes felt like Rongerhik
and all his crew and we reached out to colleagues for
assistance As the bibliography and preface amply
show, we do pay fine tribute for using other
[people s] sea routes Marshallese sailing canoe
