The documentary film movement laid the foundations of British national
film culture. Few areas of British film history have been as controversial.
Although the period of its greatest influence was the
1930s
and
1940s,
its
legacy has continued to make itself felt up to the present day. This
anthology is the first to bring together the most important material by and
on the movement. It includes generous selections from the work of the
movement s leader, John Grierson, as well as writings by Paul Rotha,
Humphrey Jennings, Alberto
Cavalcanti
and Basil Wright.

interpretations of the movement during the period. It also examines the
types of films made by the movement (such as Drifters, Spare Time and
