Zusammenfassung: | In Colonial Power, Colonial Texts, M. Keith Booker examines a number of British novels that deal with colonial rule in India in the first half of the twentieth century. The works discussed - by authors such as Rudyard Kipling, E. M. Forster, George Orwell, Paul Scott, and J. G. Farrell - date from both the colonial and postcolonial periods, and Booker pays attention as well to representations of India in both British and American popular culture, especially film. These various cultural texts open multiple viewpoints on the role of literature in the British vision of India and the role of India in the British conception of literature Drawing particularly on the work of Georg Lukacs and Fredric Jameson, Booker focuses on the treatment of British colonial power in these fictions as that treatment indicates how colonialism and decolonization participate in a larger historical process of modernization. The author uses a Marxist model of bourgeois cultural revolution to illustrate the ways these texts engage in productive exchanges with their historical context. Colonial Power, Colonial Texts will be of particular value to those who study the role of culture in colonialism and anti-colonial resistance, as well as to students and scholars of modern British literature and culture |

Keith Booker Ann Arbor Univ. of Michigan Press 1997 239 S. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier In Colonial Power, Colonial Texts, M. Colonial Power, Colonial Texts will be of particular value to those who study the role of culture in colonialism and anti-colonial resistance, as well as to students and scholars of modern British literature and culture Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1900-1997 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-1980 gnd rswk-swf Colonies dans la littérature Impérialisme dans la littérature Inde dans la littérature Roman anglais - 20e siècle - Histoire et critique Roman anglais - Influence de l'Inde Anglo-Indian fiction History and criticism British India Intellectual life Colonies in literature English fiction 20th century History and criticism English literature Indic influences Imperialism in literature Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Indienbild (DE-588)4134586-1 gnd rswk-swf Indien Motiv (DE-588)4133832-7 gnd rswk-swf Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Indien India In literature Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Indienbild (DE-588)4134586-1 s Geschichte 1900-1997 z DE-604 Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 s Indien Motiv (DE-588)4133832-7 s Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Geschichte 1900-1980 z HEBIS Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=007759949&sequence=000002&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
