The Patient Evaluation and Conference System (PECS) is a comprehensive patient
tracking system designed to assess the functional status of persons involved in phys¬
ical rehabilitation. This chapter examines the investigation of the interval scale prop ,
erties of measures of discharge goals based on the PECS functional status scales,
and it establishes that the measures from the goal scales can be statistically com¬
bined with measures of functional assessment to produce estimates of goal attain¬
ment in the rehabilitation process. Goal and status measures are used to describe
rehabilitation progress in stroke and musculoskeletal rehabilitation programs.

The Physical Ability Stroke Scale (PASS) is proposed as a brief measure of physi¬
cal ability for long term outcomes following stroke. Data were taken from a sample
of community living former stroke patients. Rasch analysis was used to select and
recode items from two existing measures. The PASS should be useful in a variety
of clinical and research settings.

Several validated but diverse quality of life measures have become accepted for
use in oncology practice. The major problem is that QL measures remain rather
diverse in scaling properties, requiring a high degree of sophistication to under¬
stand and interpret data. To address this problem, the authors have developed and
present here a standard metric for these commonly used scales.

less of who does the ratings. But is this so? This article examines the ratings of
the functional status of patients at admission to and discharge from medical reha¬
bilitation across various disciplines, and it discusses in detail the implications of
