CONTENTS
Preface ix
Steven D. Van Camp
Anatomy and Physiology of the Bull s Reproductive
System 195
Richard Fayrer Hosken
The bull s reproduction control is a finely orchestrated system;
however, the mechanism has already been predetermined. The
bull s genetics, and to a lesser extent, the environment have
already established the biological limits. Furthermore, whereas
the endocrine system appears robust, excessive pressures can
inhibit or arrest the process. Similarly, there are structural limits
to the bull s anatomy; indeed, a thorough understanding of the
anatomy and physiology will allow for successful management
of the breeding bull.
Common Causes of Infertility in the Bull 203
Steven D. Van Camp
The bull s fertility can be affected by conditions that limit his
desire or ability to copulate (Impotentia Coeundi) and conditions
that decrease his ability to fertilize ova (Impotentia Gencrandi).
These conditions can affect the entire body, or may be limited
to the external genitalia, the gonads, or the internal accessory
sex organs.
Bovine Seminal Vesiculitis: A Review and Update 233
John Cavalieri and Steven D. Van Camp
Seminal vesiculitis is the most common inflammatory condition
affecting the reproductive tract of the bull. It represents a serious

source of economic loss. This ailment is frequently seen in young
peripubertal bulls and occasionally in older bulls, and it can
negatively affect semen quality. Multiple etiologic agents have
been cultured from seminal vesiculitis cases. Medical therapy is
often unsuccessful; however, surgery offers some hope for se¬
lected young bulls.
Genetic Causes of Bull Infertility 243
David Steffen
Bull fertility is influenced by genetic factors. This article reviews
information regarding heritable fertility traits and genetic and
phenotypic descriptions of common, well characterized fertility
disturbances. Genetic disease implications on sire selection are
also discussed.
The Significance to Bull Fertility of Morphologically
Abnormal Sperm 255
Walter H. Johnson
Bull fertility depends partially on the quality of the spermatozoa
(i.e., different spermatozoa defects) produced in the ejaculate,
emphasizing the importance of the interpretation of the spermeo
gram results. This article discusses the production of normal and
abnormal spermatozoa and the influence that spermatozoa de¬
fects may have on bull fertility.
Scrotal/Testicular Thermoregulation and the Effects of
Increased Testicular Temperature in the Bull 271
John P. Kastelic, R. Byrne Cook, and Glenn H. Coulter
Scrotal/testicular thermoregulation is a complex process con¬
trolled by numerous local mechanisms that attempt to maintain
the testes at conditions ideal for spermatogenesis. This article
provides a background of the anatomy and physiology of the
bovine scrotum and its contents with emphasis on thermoregula¬
tion. Experiments are cited that demonstrate scrotal/testicular
thermoregulation mechanisms and the effect that changes in am¬
bient temperature have on internal testicular temperature and
subsequent seminal quality.
The New Society for Theriogenology Breeding Soundness
Evaluation System 283
Fred M. Hopkins and John C. Spitzer
In 1993, The Society for Theriogenology published revised stan¬
dards for breeding soundness evaluation of bulls. These revised
standards replaced the old semen score format with minimum
acceptable scores for scrotal circumference (varies with age), mo
tility (30% or fair), and morphology (70%).

Breeding Soundness Evaluation of Yearling Bulls 295
John C. Spitzer and Fred M. Hopkins
Breeding Soundness Evaluations (BSEs) are a useful tool to im¬
prove reproductive performance and profitability in beef herds.
Veterinarians providing this service must be thorough in their
evaluation, especially in yearling bulls. The 1993 Society for Theri
ogenology guidelines for BSE provide appropriate standards for
classifying yearling bulls; veterinarians are advised to adhere to
these standards as minimums for classification of the satisfactory
potential breeder.
Observations Using the New Bull Breeding Soundness
Evaluation Forms in Adult and Young Bulls 305
Robert L. Carson and James G. W. Wenzel
The new bull breeding soundness forms were used to evaluate
1276 bulls; 62.85% of these bulls were deemed satisfactory. Unsat¬
isfactory and deferred percentages were 28.92% and 8.23% respec¬
tively. Reasons for the various classifications were evaluated, and
age and breed comparisons were made.
Ancillary Tests of Bull Semen Quality 313
Duane L. Garner
Various seminal quality tests, including sperm morphology,
sperm motility, cervical mucus penetration, zona pellucida pene¬
tration, osmotic swelling, supravital staining, fluorescent staining,
and flow cytometric analyses are described in relation to their
ability to identify potential fertility in animals. The new auto¬
mated semen analyses systems reviewed in this article tend to
provide more reliable information, but may not be cost effective.
The determination of true fertility, which can be assessed only by
the number of live offspring, will continue to be required no
matter how sophisticated the seminal quality methodology be¬
comes.
Bull Libido/Serving Capacity 331
Peter J. Chenoweth
The fertility of a bull is influenced by a number of factors; how¬
ever, the most important factor is his sex drive, or libido. This
article describes methods used to assess bull sex drive and to
determine repeatability and relationships with fertility. An over¬
view of factors that influence bull sex drive is given, such as
genetics, age, sexual experience, and social interactions. Potential
pitfalls in testing procedures also are provided, as well as animal
welfare guidelines and the status of testing alternatives.
CONTENTS Vii
Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Management of
Trichomoniasis in Cattle 345
Robert H. BonDurant
Bulls are increasingly able to carry Tritrichomonas foetus in the
folds of epithelium on the surface of the penis and prepuce as
they age. Transmission to the female reproductive tract at coitus
does not necessarily interrupt fertilization, but results in embry¬
onic or fetal death after the determination of pregnancy. A defini¬
tive diagnosis in a suspect herd requires positive identification
of the cause, either from preputial scrapings/flushings, or from
aspirated cervicovaginal mucus. The self limiting nature of infec¬
tion in the female, and the chronic nature of infection in the male,
make it more profitable to pursue the diagnosis in the bull battery
first. Serological tests for screening female herds have been suc¬
cessful under experimental conditions. In natural service manage¬
ment systems, control involves segregation of the female by preg¬
nancy status; the use of young, culture negative bulls; and
vaccination of females in enzootic areas.
