About the Author
This original work provides a concise introduction to
methods that linguists, psychologists, and others may use
to describe people s responses to sentences, specifically
their intuitive assessments of the acceptability or
grammaticaliry of sentences.
Experimental Syntax will enable an investigator to
determine which among several sentence types is the more
acceptable for a given community
difference separates the several sentence types that may be
relevant to a given investigation. The methods desctibed
are shown to produce statistically reliable results, as well
as the direct replications that statistical reliability implies.
Results reported in the book apply the procedures to
several different syntactic phenomena ( that -trace,
coordination, binding theory, subjacency). The various
experiments reported in the book show that results
obtained with these methods support many differences in
acceptability that are widely assumed in the syntax
literature. They also detect other apparently related
differences that have generally gone unremarked.
This new volume also shows how to use spreadsheet
software to prepare properly structured lists of sentences
for testing, how to structure an appropriate questionnaire,
and how to summarize and analyze experimental results.
Spreadsheet templates, examples, and other materials
discussed in the book are available on the World Wide
Web so that investigators may adapt them to their own
work.
Experimental Syntax is recommended for experienced
syntactic researchers who have limited training in
experimental methods, as well as for novices new to both
syntactic research and experimentation. For sociolinguists,
the book demonstrates how studies of variation can be
linked to core issues in syntactic theory. The book should
afso be useful to experimental psychologists who have not
previously worked with sentence materials.
