| adam_text | The Scots language, a northern variety of English and the national language
of Modern Scotland, can boast a historical pedigree as ancient as its
southern English cousin. Speakers of the ancestor of Modern Scots arrived
in the south-east of Scotland from Northumberland as early as the seventh
century, at the same historical moment that the Gaelic-speaking peoples
from Ulster were colonising Argyll and Kintyre. There is a substantial
record of the language from its beginnings as early Northumbrian (later
heavily influenced by the language of the Scandinavian settlers in
north-east England and southern Scotland) through the Middle Ages to the
period of its anglicisation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Yet no inclusive History of this language has ever been written, despite the
central cultural and historical role which it has played. The Edinburgh
History of the Scots Language is the first full-scale attempt to record the
diachronic development of this important English language variety and
includes extensive essays by some of the foremost international scholars of
the Scots language. The book attempts to provide a detailed and technical
description of the syntax, phonology, morphology and vocabulary of the
language in two main periods: the beginnings to
present day. The language s geographical variation both in the past and at
the present time is fully documented, and the sociolinguistic forces which
lie behind linguistic innovation and its transmission provide a principal
theme running through the book.
The Edinburgh History of the Scots Language is an essential work of reference
for those seeking the most recent and scholarly view of all aspects of
the language s development from the earliest times to the present day,
including the scale and nature of ongoing variation and change.
