A Diagnostic Classification of Problem Behavior in Dogs
and Cats 427
J. S. J. Odendaal
Veterinary clinical ethology is a relatively new field in veterinary
practice; with the development of a new discipline, problems
often arise regarding diagnosis and the use of terminology. This
article proposes a diagnostic system that can be applied by prac¬
titioners and researchers. The classification is divided into six
main etiologic categories of behavior problems: (1) problems of a
genetic origin, (2) problems caused during the animal s develop¬
mental stages, (3) ethogram deviations, (4) disturbed social inter¬
action, (5) disease related behavior, and (6) adaptation inabilities.
Conditions may overlap, and all categories involved in a diagno¬
sis should be mentioned for the sake of clarity and completeness.
Canine Communication 445
Barbara Sherman Simpson
Canine communication is the way that dogs signal their motiva¬
tional state and probable future behavior to conspecifics and
human beings. This information can be given in the form of
visual, olfactory, and acoustic signals. Despite 10,000 years of
selective breeding, dogs appear to have retained many of the
stereotypical display signals of their closest relative, the wolf.
Recognizing normal canine communication signals provides in¬
sight into the social world of dogs and allows veterinary clini

dans to greet, restrain, and treat dogs with greater efficiency and
understanding.
Puppy Socialization Classes 465
Kersti Seksel
Setting up a puppy training program is one of the most important
services veterinarians can offer. Puppy socialization classes aim
not only to socialize the puppies so that they learn to interact
well with children, adults, and other dogs, but also to teach basic
obedience exercises. The classes build a strong bond between
puppy, owner, and veterinary clinic. This article covers the tech¬
niques used, the structure of the classes, and outlines benefits for
the dog, owner, veterinarian, and community.
Assessment, Management, and Prognosis of Canine
Dominance Related Aggression 479
liana R. Reisner
Aggression directed at owners continues to be the most common
reason for which dogs are presented to behavioral practices.
Diagnosis of this problem is discussed, along with evidence that
aggression may be pathologic in some cases. Management of
aggression emphasizes safety for owners and realistic expecta¬
tions for control of the aggression. Other topics discussed include
aggression toward children and updates on the neurobiologic
and pharmacotherapeutic aspects of dominance related aggres¬
sion.
Social Dynamics and Behavior Problems in Multiple Dog
Households 497
Soraya V. Juarbe Diaz
Certain behavior problems can be aggravated by the presence of
conspecifics. Behavior problems that can occur in multiple dog
households as a result of social facilitation are discussed, along
with behavior modification and pharmacologic treatments neces¬
sary to manage the problem.
Assessment and Treatment of Excessive Barking in the
Domestic Dog 515
Soraya V. Juarbe Diaz
Barking is a normal behavior in the domestic dog, but it can
become a problem when excessive. Understanding the motivation
of the nuisance barking dog is the first step in devising a treat¬
ment plan. The use of behavior modification techniques with or
without medication is discussed. Recommendations for preven¬
tion of the problem also are outlined.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Destructive Behavior in Dogs 533
Ellen M. Lindell
Destructive behavior in dogs can be expensive for owners and
life threatening for dogs. The human companion animal bond is
jeopardized. A diagnostic plan should address both behavioral
and medical causes of destructive behavior. Once a diagnosis has
been established, a successful therapeutic plan can be formulated.
Treatment includes modification of both behavior and environ¬
ment and may incorporate the judicious use of psychotropic
medication.
Social Behavior and Aggressive Problems of Cats 549
Sharon L. Crowell Davis, Kimberly Barry,
and Randall Wolfe
Cats form social groups in which individuals recognize each
other, and the cohesiveness of the group is maintained by a
variety of amicable behaviors. Agonistic behavior may occur be¬
tween group members and between group members and non
group members. Within the domestic environment, agonistic be¬
havior may become a problem when it is directed at housemates
or humans. Differential diagnosis and treatment of various prob¬
lems of aggressive behavior are discussed.
Feline Inappropriate Elimination 569
Leslie Larson Cooper
Cases involving inappropriate elimination can be treated success¬
fully through careful diagnosis, identification of causative factors,
and development of an appropriate treatment plan. Veterinarians
can provide a valuable service to their clients through case work
ups, educational information, and timely referrals. Normal elimi¬
nation and marking behavior and causative factors involved in
inappropriate elimination cases are reviewed. Treatments, includ¬
ing behavior modification techniques and drug therapy sugges¬
tions, also are included in this article.
Sexual Behavior Problems in Dogs and Cats 601
Katherine A. Houpt
Sexual behavior problems do occur as a primary diagnosis, but
excessive sexual behavior is a common secondary problem.
Mounting occurs in almost half of dogs with behavior problems
and 20% of cats with behavior problems.

apy. The nature of learned behavior is reviewed at a practical
level. General programs for increasing and decreasing a behavior
are described, along with guidelines for considering and assessing
their efficacy in any given situation.
Pharmacologic Treatments for Behavior Problems 637
Karen L. Overall
Most of the future advances in therapy with behavioral medicine
probably will be pharmacologic. Newer developments in tricyclic
antidepressants, specific and nonspecific anxiolytics, narcotic ago¬
nist antagonists, and benzodiazepines will have great relevance
for veterinary medicine. As the field of behavioral medicine ex¬
pands, its paradigm hopefully will enlarge to include combina¬
tion therapy and the implementation of neuropharmacologic in¬
tervention as a diagnostic tool. At present, the veterinary
practitioner can effectively aid many common behavioral prob¬
lems, with the glaring exception of most aggressions, using ex¬
tant drugs.
Behavior Problems of Pet Pigs 667
Valarie V. Tynes
Many pet potbellied pigs are given up by their owners because
of behavior problems. Most of these problems can be prevented
if the pig owner understands the pet pig s special needs. This
article helps the practicing veterinarian counsel new and prospec¬
tive owners about the proper raising and training of the pet pig.
Normal swine social behavior and how it applies to the pet pig,
more common potbellied pig behavior problems, and prevention
are covered.
