NEW TECH NOLOGI ES IN PHYSICAL THERAPY
CONTENTS
Preface ix
CHRISTOPHER J. HUGHES
Foot Pressure Measurement 1
VALERIE M. DONAGHUE and ARISTIDIS VEVES
Foot pressure measurements have been attempted for more than half a
century, but only recently have computer developments allowed the
inexpensive, reliable usage of these techniques for extensive research
and daily clinical practice. The most common medical condition for
which they are used is the diabetic, neuropathic foot, which can
ulcerate easily as a result of high foot pressures and pain insensitivity.
This article reviews the development of foot pressure measurement
techniques and describes the authors' experience with the F Scan
system (Tekscan, Boston, MA).
Clinical Analysis Using the Peak Motus Motion Measurement
System 17
GERALD L. SCHEIRMAN, DAVID R. SCHRAG, and SANDRA J. OLNEY
Peak Motus is a powerful, new motion measurement tool that allows the
clinician and researcher to collect musculoskeletal data for applications
such as gait analysis, motor control, sports performance, and range of
motion. Developed by Peak Performance Technologies, Inc. (Englewood,
CO), it collects kinematic data, using video or real time tracking and
integrates easily with kinetic data from force platforms, electromyograph
systems, pressure devices, and other analog devices.
Balance Is a Critical Parameter in Orthopedic Rehabilitation 43
TIMOTHY L. KAUFFMAN, LEWIS M. NASHNER. and LESLIE K. ALLISON
New technologic advances are expanding greatly the clinician's ability
to evaluate balance and to treat patients who have balance dysfunction.
An historical review is presented, and biomechanical concepts are
described. Specific orthopedic conditions are discussed, and treatment
applications are provided.

Applications of Virtual Reality Technology to Therapy and
Rehabilitation: Including Physical Therapy and Disability
Solutions 81
WALTER J. GREENLEAF
Research is underway to determine if the rehabilitation process can be
enhanced through the use of virtual reality (VR) technology. Currently,
four basic premises are being investigated: Can VR technology be used
to distill rehabilitation into discrete, incremental steps, facilitating the
overall process? Would the use of VR technology make the rehabilitation
process more realistic and less boring, and thus enhance recovery of
function? Can patient outcomes be standardized, documented, and
analyzed more effectively using simulated environments and objective
measurement tools? Can VR technology facilitate home rehabilitation?
Physiologic Effects and Design Considerations of Tilt and
Recline Wheelchairs 99
STEPHEN SPRIGLE and BRENDA SPOSATO
Wheelchairs that can alter the user's posture have become more
available in recent years. Evaluating patients for a tilt in space or
recliner wheelchair requires more clinical knowledge and experience
because of the effects that these chairs have on the body and the
environment. This article identifies certain effects that tilt and recline
have on the wheelchair user, defines the design features of these systems
that affect the use of the wheelchair and its interaction with the
environment, and provides the clinician with certain issues that should
be addressed when determining the appropriateness of tilt and recline.
