Zusammenfassung:In this volume leading historians and economists from India and the West consider the conditions and purposes governing the practices and understandings of South Asian agriculture. They demonstrate some persistent features and variable forces which explain changes through their impact on different levels of decision-making in agriculture. New light is cast on the pre-colonial and colonial periods, and on current development policies and problems
Meanings of Agriculture advocates a rethinking of the connections between the different forms and functions of agriculture in practice, and the theoretical analysis of agriculture-related issues, especially economic change and development. The intention is to cast doubt on current procedures and debates by reflecting on the frequent discrepancies between empirical findings on the conditions of agricultural production and the assumptions and generalized explanations underlying many assessments of agrarian change or policy. The basic issues are, first, the appropriateness to South Asia of available theories; and second, the applicability of analytical and empirical techniques. In short, the essays in this volume question established interpretations. The attention to perceptions within this book overcomes the tendency in much earlier writing to stereotype agriculture and to neglect or misinterpret details of agricultural processes and contexts
