Thomas Mann
biography of one of the century s most important and
influential writers. It is a portrait of Mann s Germany, his
work, his life until his exile and arrival in America
of suffering and courage, of great achievement, a life beset
by political hostility from the right and the left, and by the
torments of sexual frustration.
Anthony Heilbut reveals Mann, the
transforming the history of his family into Germany s first
classic novel,
female self) and the boy they both loved, and the
competition between Thomas and his brother
who became his greatest literary rival. It was an enduring
struggle that was to shape their lives with ethical,
emotional, political and artistic disagreement.
Mann s early love affair with a young violinist, Paul
Ehrenberg
later dramatised in Doctor Faustus, is described as is his
unlikely courtship of Katia Pringsheim. Heilbut follows
their life together during their fifty-year marriage and
observes Mann s complicated relations with his six
children, particularly Klaus and
leading political and sexual radicals of their generation.
Usually portrayed as a monster of egotism, Mann is shown
to be a brave and lonely figure, his place in literary history
brilliantly defined as Heilbut considers his relation to his
literary ancestors, particularly Goethe and Nietzsche, as
well as his contemporaries
American writers. Whitman and Melville. Focusing on
Mann s literary achievement Heilbut provides new social
and psychological insights into the interplay of his life with
such works as Death in Venice, The Magic Mountain,
Joseph and his Brothers and The Confessions of Felix Krull.
This is an important and original biography, adventurous
and beautifully written, that shows both the artist and the
complex chronically ambivalent man who was one of the
century s literary titans.
