Zusammenfassung:This volume presents a selection of some of the most significant critical work written on Andre Gide during his lifetime and since. As a major writer of the twentieth century, his life, work, and role as a leading intellectual attracted comment from prominent contemporaries and continues to have relevance today. The study contains a substantial introduction to the life and major influences on Gide's writing, exploring the dual stresses of homosexuality and religious dogma that set him on his search for identity and integrity in the face of convention. Two further sections discuss both the general themes in Gide's work and address particular texts including among others L'Immoraliste (1902), Les Caves du Vatican (1914) and Les Faux Monnayeurs (1926). Each contribution contains an introductory headnote to set the piece in context and a bibliography, index and glossary complete the text.
