Zusammenfassung: | This is a new edition of Andrew Gurr's classic account of the people for whom Shakespeare wrote his plays. Gurr assembles all the evidence from the writings of the time to describe the physical structure of the different types of playhouse, the services provided in the auditorium, the cost of a ticket and a cushion, the size of the crowds, the smells, the pickpockets, and the collective feelings generated by the plays. Since 1987 there have been many new discoveries about Shakespeare's theatres. Gurr introduces fresh evidence about the experience of being at a play in Shakespeare's time, adds more than thirty new entries to his account of the early playgoers and provides a select bibliography. |

Illustrations
1 A merchant s wife, one of a series of engravings by
Wenceslas Hollar made in the early 1630s (Catalogue
no. P1893) page 7
2 A map of London, based on Braun and Hogenberg s map
of 1572, showing the playhouses built between 1567
and 1629 14
3 The Swan playhouse, a drawing by Arendt van Buchel
from Johannes De Witt s sketch made in 1596 17
4 The second Globe (1614 44), a detail from Wenceslas
Hollar s Long View of London. In the original the
names of the two Southwark amphitheatres, the Globe
and the beere baiting house or Hope, were acciden¬
tally reversed. In this reproduction the name has been
transferred to the correct building, the second Globe,
built in 1614 19
5 The audience in the lords rooms at the Swan, a detail
from De Witt s sketch 21
6 A detail from Hollar s Long View of London. The long
steep pitched roof with two slender chimneys or
lanterns jutting from the middle, below and to the
right of St Bride s four spired tower, is probably the
Blackfriars hall of 1596 24
7 The Duke of Ormond (Lord Thurles), from a portrait in
the National Portrait Gallery (Catalogue no. 370) 29
8 Plans made in about 1616, probably for Beeston s
Cockpit playhouse in Drury Lane, by Inigo Jones 33
9 Coaches in Whitehall, an engraving from the 1630s by
Hollar (P1040) 36
10 A view of Lambeth (with the Archbishop, Laud,
embarking) by Hollar (P1038). The sheds hanging over
the river on the right are possibly privies. 38
11 A woodcut from a broadside ballad, showing gallants
taking tobacco 39

xii Illustrations
12 Detail from a painting of a sermon at Paul s Cross in
1620. The audience are all in the clothing of citizens 43
13 A woodcut from a broadside ballad, showing
Elizabethan use of feathers and fan 44
14 Moll Frith, from the titlepage of The Roaring Girl,
1612 63
15 An audience for William Alabaster s Roxana (1632).
Possibly it depicts a hall playhouse, most likely the
Cockpit 78
16 William Drummond of Hawthornden, from a painting
(NPG1195) 100
17 Richard Tarlton with his stage trappings, from a sepia
wash drawing in the Pepys Library, Cambridge 127
18 A possible portrait of Edward Alleyn dressed as
Tamburlaine in the 1590s. The engraving appears in
Richard Knolles, A General Historie of the Tnrkes,
1603 143
19 The titlepage of Swetnam the Woman Hater, 1620.
This picture probably is not a reproduction of the stage
performance, since the room shown has windows, so it
cannot represent the tiring house wall behind the
stage. But the seat of justice may well have been imi¬
tated on stage for the state or throne of a judge or a
king, and the women shown all wear citizen dress of
the time, including their hats. 178
20 The Duke of Buckingham, from a painting (NPG3840) 181
21 Bulstrode Whitelocke, from a painting in St John s
College, Oxford 211

Ill. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier This is a new edition of Andrew Gurr's classic account of the people for whom Shakespeare wrote his plays.
