Zusammenfassung: | "The Gift brings together perspectives on gift exchange and reciprocity from different social scientific disciplines. In what may be considered as anthropological and sociological 'classics' by authors like Malinowski and Levi-Strauss, gifts are seen as the moral cement of social relationships; patterns of reciprocity lie at the basis of a shared culture. Social psychological theories on gift giving in Western Society focus on the fundamental psychological functions of gift giving: gifts are the mirrors of both the giver's and the recipient's identities. The example of the poisonous gift shows that our gift giving doesn't necessarily imply friendly intentions; it may also be motivated by hostile or destructive feelings. Power and gift exchange are often related to each other." "The main concepts underlying gift exchange - reciprocity, self-interest and altruism - raise questions about human nature: are we mainly driven by self-interest (as rational choice theorists assume), or are altruistic motives and feelings of sympathy and commitment possible too?" "In the conclusion to The Gift, the editor argues that neither altruism nor self-interest are the unitary and unambiguous categories we are usually taking them for. Altruism and self-interest are much more interwoven than we are inclined to think."--BOOK JACKET. |
