Preface xi
Clifford R. Swanson
General Principles of Anesthesia and Sedation in
Food Animals 473
D. David Lee and Clifford R. Swanson
Minimal risk anesthesia practice demands that fundamental
physiologic and pharmacologic principles be applied to the spe¬
cific medical and surgical needs of individual patients. In devel¬
oping an anesthesia plan for a patient, health status must be
assessed and considered along with other extrinsic factors such
as the physical setting in which the anesthetic procedure will be
performed, the availability of equipment and supplies, and the
academic and technical training and abilities of participating per¬
sonnel. This article reviews considerations for developing anes¬
thesia protocols for ruminant and swine species.
Physiologic and Pathophysiologic Considerations for
Ruminant and Swine Anesthesia 481
Joan S. Jorgensen and Allen L. Cannedy
This article presents physiologic and pathophysiologic processes
that may affect decisions regarding anesthetic protocol. Various
organ systems are discussed with specific attention given to
pathophysiologic alterations and their effects on anesthesia.

Pharmacology of Drugs Used For Anesthesia
and Sedation 501
William J. Tranquilli and Kurt A. Grimm
This article reviews and defines the concepts underlying modern
pharmacologic science, such as the study of pharmacokinetics,
pharmodynamics, and drug interactions. Differences in anesthetic
and sedative effects observed among species may be explained,
in part, by varying pharmacokinetics and dynamics unique to
each species. Pharmacokinetic data from ruminants and swine
for many of the commonly used anesthetics and adjunctive seda¬
tives are included. The receptor mechanism mediating the actions
of anesthetics and sedatives is also reviewed. Rationale for com¬
bining CNS depressant drugs and analgesics to achieve balanced
anesthesia and other favorable drug interactions is discussed.
Several drug combinations used in ruminants and swine are
provided in table form.
Supplies and Technical Considerations for Ruminant and
Swine Anesthesia 531
Ellen Tobin and Elaine Hunt
Intravenous catheter placement can save lives during the anesthe¬
tic experience. Utilization of catheters during ruminant swine
anesthesia will make it possible to administer injectable anesthe¬
tics, rapidly access the cardiovascular system in response to unan¬
ticipated acutely life threatening events, and perfuse the animal
continuously with intravenous fluids that may help correct the
blood Ph anomalies and organ perfusion problems that would
otherwise complicate anesthetic procedures in these animals. This
article discusses catheter selection, advantages of different sites,
catheterization placement techniques, maintenance, and compli¬
cations. To help the practitioner select the appropriate materials,
several tables are included that indicate the manufacturer s name
and suggested price for each item. Where appropriate, comments
are made by the authors regarding advantages and disadvantages
of each.
Management and Emergency Intervention During
Anesthesia 563
Kris T. Kruse Elliott
Proper management and monitoring during anesthesia minimizes
the need for emergency intervention. Monitoring of circulation,
ventilation, and oxygenation allows for early recognition of prob¬
lems such as airway obstruction, hypotension, acid base distur¬
bances, or cardiac arrest, and is discussed. Appropriate therapies
are instituted early for best success and are described in this arti¬
cle.
Vi CONTENTS
Local and Regional Anesthesia in Ruminants and Swine 579
Roman T. Skarda
This article reviews the use of popular local and regional anesthe¬
tic and analgesic techniques for surgical anesthesia and postoper¬
ative analgesia in cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. The emphasis is
on proper technique, the use of a 2% lidocaine hydrochloride
solution, and the epidural administration of a2 adrenoceptor ago¬
nists and opioids for producing intra and postoperative analgesia
in ruminants and swine while preserving consciousness and min¬
imizing side effects.
General Anesthetic Techniques in Ruminants 627
Gwendolyn L. Carroll and Sandee M. Hartsfield
This article reviews the injectable and inhalant techniques used
for general anesthesia in cattle, sheep, and goats. Particular atten¬
tion is given to recently developed injectable and inhalant drugs
that are currently available in the United States. Perioperative
care, including preoperative preparation and perioperative anal¬
gesia, is also addressed.
General Anesthetic Techniques in Swine 663
Paula F. Moon and Lesley J. Smith
General anesthesia techniques for swine can be challenging due
to the animal s temperament, anatomic traits, physical condition,
and the environment in which the clinician may be working.
Taking these factors into consideration, this article provides spe¬
cific information on preanesthetic considerations, venous cathe
terization, drug selection, monitoring, perioperative complica¬
tions and therapy, recovery, and analgesia.
Drug Residue Considerations for Anesthetics and Adjunctive
Drugs in Food Producing Animals 693
Mark G. Papich
This article is a summary of residue concerns for anesthetics and
anesthetic adjuncts used in food animals. The risks associated
with residues of these drugs in food producing animals, as well
as the veterinarian s responsibility to reduce this risk, are dis¬
cussed. The potential for residues and suggestions for prevention
in each of the major anesthetic drug classes are described. Sug¬
gested withdrawal times are proposed for nonapproved drugs
used off label. Each class of drug is summarized in the tables.
Research Applications Using Pigs 707
Glen W. Almond
The pig has proven to be a valuable model for biomedical re¬
search. Physiologic, anatomic, and pathologic similarities between
CONTENTS v
pigs and humans create numerous research applications using
the pig. Recent changes in the pork industry have created the
need for research with direct applications to commercial pork
production. The pig is a valuable research resource and will
continue to be important in various research programs.
