Foreword
The papers in this volume were presented at the
2nd.
'Speak!' project workshop held
at the GMD's Institute for Integrated Publication and Information Systems (IPSI) in
Darmstadt in November
1995.
The theme of the workshop was the investigation of the use
of speech synthesis and automatic text generation technologies in the service of new style
information systems. This requires progress on several broad research and development
fronts, ranging from improvements in the basic quality of speech synthesis components,
through enhancements in the opportunities such components offer for control, to high-level
issues of dialogue modelling and possible application scenarios. It is clear that speech
synthesis offers an important further modality for information presentation in
multimodal
information systems—just what information is best presented in this way is, however, not
yet sufficiently well understood and is in need of further study.
The principle motivation for the workshop was provided by the EU-funded cooperation
project 'Speak!' (EU-Copernicus project CP10393), being carried out by the Technical
Universities of Budapest and Darmstadt in close cooperation with GMD-IPSI. One goal of
this project is precisely to investigate the use of speech synthesis in new styles
ofinformation
systems, employing advanced automatic text generation, dialogue modelling, information
retrieval and retrieval interface design methods. Since the main language of investigation
of the project is German, most of the language-specific papers selected for
presention
at
the workshop focus on issues of the synthesis of German prosody; there are several papers,
however, that describe more general issues not restricted to the treatment of particular
languages.
Six of the papers included here (those of Bateman, Ferenczi, Hagen/Stein,
Németh,
and
Olaszy) are drawn from the Speak! project and together these serve as a snapshot of
ongoing work both within the project and more generally within the respective research
areas involved.1
The complete set of papers is organized to reflect the different aspects of the problem being
addressed. The groupings are as follows:
