As a child Iain Crichton Smith spoke
Gaelic in his village on the island of
Lewis. At school on Stornoway he spoke
English. Like many islanders before and
since, his culture is divided: he had to
leave home to make his way in life. A
sense of exile is at the heart of his poetry
in Gaelic and in English. He does not
romanticize Scotland: the split-
perspective of his languages and cultures
gives him a sharp sense of the tyranny of
history and religion, of the cramped life
of small communities, and a tender eye
for the struggle of women, old and
young, in a world defined by denials.
This Collected Poems includes forty
years writing and confirms Smith as one
of the best Scottish poets of our time. He
proves that big themes - love, history,
power, submission and death - acquire
resonance when given a local habitation
and spoken in a voice that risks pure,
impassioned speech.
Born on the Isle of Lewis in 1928, Iain
Crichton Smith was educated at the
University of Aberdeen (MA 1950), and
served as a sergeant in the British Army
Education Corps (1950-52). He was a
secondary school-teacher in Clydebank
and then for twenty-two years at Oban
High School. In 1977 he retired to write
full time. He has received many awards^
honorary degrees, and the QBE (1980).
Carcanet publish four collections of his
poetry: Selected Poems, The Exiles, A Life
and The Village, and also his Selected
Stories.
