Zusammenfassung:Among members of the legal profession and the judiciary, there is a genuine concern with establishing and maintaining high ethical standards. More than a set of rules of good conduct, legal ethics and professional responsibility are also a commitment to honesty, integrity and service in the practice of law. As such, underlying themes in this collection of essays posit that the move toward definite rules is not only inevitable but desirable; that existing codes of professional practice cannot be treated as a system of specific rules; that the current set of ethical rules is contestable and requires refinement and perhaps radical surgery; and that legal ethics must be conceived within the more general framework of professional responsibility
With wider ethical issues involving the legal profession now firmly on the agenda, both legal scholars and professionals are engaged in the development of acceptable standards. It is therefore appropriate that the essays in this volume are written by a distinguished group of law teachers, practitioners, and senior members of the judiciary. The essays in this volume arose from the 1993 annual conference of the Society of Public Teachers of Law (the SPTL) at which the theme was professional responsibility and legal ethics
