The Frequency of Golf Injuries 1
John R. McCarroll
Golf injuries in both the amateur and professional golfer are
under reported in the literature. Back and elbow injuries are the
most common injuries in amateur male and female golfers,
whereas lower back and wrist injuries are more likely to affect
the game of the professional male and female golfer. Injuries are
related to overuse, poor conditioning, and improper mechanics.
Proper Swing Technique and Biomechanics of Golf 9
Gregory S. Adlington
More people are playing the game of golf than ever before. Many
are coming to the game with knowledge only of other sports and
their proper techniques, resulting in an increase in the number
of golf related injuries. Proper evaluation of swing technique
combined with a solid practice program and properly fitted
equipment allow players a chance to play pain free and stay
pain free. Swing technique is one of the variables that can be
molded to fit each individual player and situation.
Tendinitis in Golf 27
William G. Clancy, Jr, and Steven V. Hagan
The term tendinitis has been used in a universal fashion to de¬
scribe a variety of pathologic conditions. This article examines
CLINICS IN SPORTS MEDICINE VOLUME 15 • NUMBER 1 • JANUARY 19% V
the pathology of tendon failure. The anatomy of the tendon
and the spectrum of tendon injuries are discussed. Histologic
evaluation of injured tendons usually reveals areas of tendinosis,
or tendon degeneration, with an occasional inflammatory infil¬
trate of the paratenon, the outer connective tissue lining layer. A
variety of treatment options are presented.
Back Pain in Golf 37
Timothy M. Hosea and Charles J. Gatt, Jr
Although golfing generally is considered a benign activity, lower
back pain is endemic among golfers. The golf swing subjects the
lumbar spine to rapid, intense loads, more frequently in amateurs
than in professionals. These loads predispose the golfing popula¬
tion to muscle strains, lumbar disc disease, spondylolysis, and
facet joint arthropathy. It is imperative for all golfers to warm up
properly, develop good swing mechanics, and participate in a
lower back conditioning program off the golf course.
Shoulder Pain in Golf 55
Frank W. Jobe and Marilyn M. Pink
Shoulder pain in the golfer is usually the result of overuse. In
defining the cause of the pain, one must consider the age of the
golfer as well as the individual mechanics of the swing. A thor¬
ough patient examination is essential to diagnose golfers accu¬
rately and to treat them optimally. This article offers three cases
to illustrate different causes of shoulder pain in the golfer.
Prevention and Treatment of Elbow Injuries in Golf 65
Harvey S. Kohn
Golf interest is on the increase, resulting in a corresponding
increase in golf related tendon injuries. Injuries are best avoided
by a good strength and flexibility program, proper warm up
exercises, and good stroke mechanics. Treatment is directed to¬
ward restoring the integrity of the muscle/tendon unit at the
elbow and preventing recurrences.
Golf induced Injuries of the Wrist 85
Peter M. Murray and William P. Cooney
Golf injuries of the wrist are rare, but when they occur they
can be devastating to the golfer, as the hand and wrist are so
integral to the game. The majority of golf injuries are overuse
injuries of the wrist flexor or extensor tendons. This article dis¬
cusses the wrist biomechanics of the golf swing, as well as the
diagnosis and treatment of various overuse injuries, including
de Quervain s disease and extensor carpi ulnaris tendinitis.

Knee Injuries in Golf 111
Gary N. Guten
Thirty five golfing patients with knee pain were studied over a
2 year period. Most patients were able to return to active golfing
with conservative treatment and, in some cases, surgical manage¬
ment. The patient considered at high risk for reinjury is one
who has had a previous meniscectomy. Patients with total knee
replacements were able to return to golf with minimal modifica¬
tions in their level of activity.
Foot and Ankle Considerations in Golf 129
Thomas A. Pietrocarlo
This article describes foot and ankle function in golfing, as their
importance is becoming increasingly understood. Emphasis is
placed on how proper biomechanics of the foot during the golf
swing are necessary for the proper transference of weight and an
efficient swing. Foot and ankle problems that may impair the
swing are reviewed.
Preventative Exercises in Golf: Arm, Leg, and Back 147
Marilyn M. Pink, Frank W. Jobe, Lewis A. Yocum, and
Robert Mottram
Recreational athletes tend to prefer to spend their workout time
on their sport of choice rather than on exercises designed to
prevent injury. In order to prevent injuries (and to make
the game more enjoyable), however, it is wise to distribute
one s workout time between warming up, stretching, muscular
strengthening, and endurance and cardiovascular conditioning.
This article discusses the components of an exercise program
designed to prevent injuries and improve an individual s golf
game.
Golf for the Senior Player 163
Cornelius Stover and John Stoltz
No other sport caters to the senior player as much as golf. It
allows seniors the opportunity to participate and compete at
various skill levels. In addition, many equipment and travel pack¬
ages are geared to the senior player. Advancing medical technol¬
ogy and specialized instruction effectively combat the physical
effects of aging. These and other factors will ensure the continued
popularity of golf.
Total Joint Replacement and Golf 179
William J. Mallon, Ralph A. Liebelt, and J. Bohannon Mason
Although definitive characterization of the effects of golf on a
total joint replacement remains elusive, this article offers some
CONTENTS vii
conclusions based on several observations. From these authors
study of active golfers, solicitation of the opinions of orthopedists
who specialize in joint replacements, and from a careful review
of the literature regarding exercise and total joint replacement, it
appears possible for patients to remain active golfers with no
significant increase in either symptoms or rates of revision of
implants following total hip, knee, or shoulder replacement.
The Mind/Body Connection of the Golf Swing 191
Frank A. Selicki and Errol Segall
Golf is rapidly becoming the sport of all ages. Some play it a few
times in a season; others play it every day. It is game enjoyed by
both amateurs and professionals. Golf is played socially as well
as for millions of dollars in prize money. Some play with high
handicaps; others play with no handicap. All golfers, however,
play the game with their physical bodies as well as their minds.
Golf has a definite mind/body connection of which every golfer
should be aware. This article describes this connection, how it
became recognized, its theories, its problems, and the solutions
to the difficulties it can present.
