The study is an attempt to introduce the imposing and many-sided
personality of Jonas
Şliupas (1861—I944),
to

description of his activities, philosophical works and to point out the
dominating problems of his philosophy.

It is commonly recognteed

in order to make generalizations
initially we

accumulate a certain level of analytical knowledge.
In the monograph an attempt has been made at achieving this parti-
rular
goal without the claims of presenting final or categorical con¬
clusions. This work is one of the possible interpretations of J.
Sliüpas*
philosophical heritage. While trying to reconstruct ideas and thinking
of a distant past a historian of philosophy has to reconcile himself to
a certain risk, possible subject

interests, felt a special calling to evoke his nation for a new life.
Thus it was important for the author of the present monograph to re¬
veal the main needs of the nation inspiring J. SHQpas* ideas and prob¬
lems which he propagated tried to

those ideas played in the life of the Lithuanian nation. The authentic
and unfading significance of J. SHupas philosophical works is revea¬
led best only in the relatively broad context of the Lithuanian spi¬
ritual culture of the end of the

of a philosopher and his time (thus becoming important by itself)

However J. SHupas philosophical considerations vividly reflect not
only

creative personality but also his
époque, a
very special and
cofnpl cafed period in the fire of the Lithuanian nation at the end of
the 19th

known as national revival, political and cultural dynamism
and contradictions in thft community of Lithuanian emigrants in Ame¬
rica at the turn of the centuries, complicated social and political reali¬
ties in the independent Lithuanian state.
J. SHupas philosophical views and
ou

look are not integral. This
might be partly conditioned by extremely varied, uneven, ideologically
contradictory theoretical sources of his philosophical creation. The
main sources of J. SHupas philosophical views could be considered
the materialism of
Büchner,
Christian socialism (ethical Ideas), posi-
iivism, utilitarian and evolutional
ťthies,
ethical socialism, „cathedral
socialism , marxism (Only some ideas). Though in his works J. SliO-
pas depended on rich and varied theoretical material, his philosophi¬
cal outlook is marked by creativity which manifests itself by adoption

and rearrangement of different ideas, their unification or enlargement
through his own considerations.

His works as well as those of simi¬
lar importance belonging to the pen

J. Adomaítís
vividly reveal the
substance and peculiarities of materialism (naturalism) of that period.
Secondly, J.
Simpas
played a considerable role in forming the princip¬
les of free-thinking outlook of independent Lithuania.
Scientific orientation (philosophical principles defined more pre¬
cisely on the basis
oí
scientific ¡acts), empiricism and radical criti¬
cism are characteristic to his contemplations on nature and on human
being as a part of nature.
It is difficult to give a monosemantic evaluation to J.
Simpas
social conception. He was more concerned with the popularization of
social ideas than their detailed treatment, therefore, he himseH occa¬
sionally used to make excuses on the signs of superficiality and. tra¬
ces of haste in his theoretical works. His social views are indeed mar¬
ked by pragmatism, publicism, sometimes they lack consistency, discre¬
pancies and other inadequacies are often met in them. Two main the¬
mes
—
the development of the society into a more progressive one and
the image of the iuture society
—
dominate the structure of the society
conception. The development of the society is determined by the factors
of essentially spiritual origin (science, education, morals) though other
reasons conditioning changes (economics, struggle for existence) are
n mentioned, often without indicating the subordination of the factors
referred to. The model of the future society which J.
Simpas
shaped
during his whole creative life acquired a clearer, more detailed and more
conceptual expression only in the last years
oí
his creative activity. In
its theoretical construction this model was related to the society con¬
ception used by the „liaudininkai party in the prewar independent
Lithuania, and served as the basis for the free-thinkers social views.
In creating the theoretical-methodological foundations for his social
conception J.
Simpas
mostly employed the ideas and methodical prin¬
ciples of positivism, the so-called „cathedral socialism ,
neokantiani
and some ideas of
marxist
theory.
J. SHtipas, one of the most prominent founders of secular ethics in
Lithuania (next to
J. Adomaitis, P. Avižonis, P.
Leonas),
consistently
developed the conception of „natural morals . Ethical views constitute
perhaps the most mature and original part of his philosophical heri¬
tage.
J. SUupas strove to create secular ethics, which he called a re¬
ligion of humanness, able to/substitute traditional Christian ethics
and capable of influencing the development of spiritual processes in
Lithuania. Naturalist, evolutionary and utilitarian tendencies prevail
in the solutions of ethical problems. The principle of unity of rights and
obligations could be considered an integrating element
oí
the ethics
mentioned above. All the other elements of ethical conception are rela¬
ted in one or another way to this principle, i.e. the problem of the
origin of morals, the problem of happiness, the principle of reasonab¬
le egoism, moral education, etc.
Theoretical maturity is not the most characteristic feature

Sliüpas
philosophy. We consider him a thinker of practical propen¬
sity, who greatly influenced Lithuanian national consciousness, parti¬
cularly at the end of the 19th

and made a considerable and specific
contribution to diffeerent fields of Lithuanian spiritual culture. Thus

he enjoyed great respect and authority both in his contemporary Lit¬
huania and among American emigrants. When we try to evaluate
J, Sliupas creative works from the distance of our, days, different
shortcomings, negative features seem but pale shadows now. Philo¬
sophical ideas which he propagated for decades incited the Lithuanian
nation for action, sustained moral and cultural strenght of the people.
Examples of unselfish devotion and work for the benefit of one s
native country are features of great demand in our present-day life.
