ence there are few masterpieces: Georges Canguilhem s The
Normal and the Pathological is indisputably one of them.
Not unlike Nietzsche s investigation of the historical con¬
struction of truth and falsehood,
Canguřlhem
incisively exam¬
ines the history of notions of health and disease, and shows
how the shifting and unequal relation between these terms
is linked to the changing requirements of institutional power.
In doing so, he highlights the peculiar epistemological sta¬
tus of the sciences of trie

physiology and biology
—
whose
objects of study resist formatization and quantification.
Ganguifnem demonstrates, in a brilliant series of analyses,
how the ideas of the normal and the pathological, far from
being scientifically or statistically determined, are rather
concepts of value deeply imbued with political, economic
and technological imperatives. The modern formation of the
individual is inseparable from the processes and discourses
detailed by Canguilhem. In his conclusion, he outlines a his¬
tory of practices of normalization in early modern France
and the passage from the grammatical norms of the seven¬
teenth century, by way of hygienic, juridical and industrial
norms, to the physiological norms of men and women for
productive labor in the emerging modern industrial state.
