CONTENTS
Preface xi
Robert C. Rosenthal and K. Ann Jeglum
Multimodality Therapy: Using the Best Available Treatments
Together Rationally 1
Robert C. Rosenthal
Cancer cases comprise an increasingly important part of compan¬
ion animal practice. As the state of veterinary oncology continues
to improve, the combined use of modalities (surgery, chemother¬
apy, and radiotherapy for the most part, biologic response modi¬
fication to some extent) will be widely evaluated, and its clinical
application will become more common.
Surgical Oncology 9
Jay Harvey
Observations about the surgical oncologist and the discipline of
surgical oncology are discussed.
Radiation Therapy: A Radiation Oncologist s Point of View 17
G. Neal Mauldin
This article is intended as a clinical introduction to radiation
therapy as a treatment modality. It discusses the indications and
contraindications for radiotherapy. Additionally, it attempts to
cover the expected response of a wide variety of tumors to radia¬
tion. It should be remembered that veterinary radiotherapy is still

SMALL ANIMAL PRACTICE

in its infancy, and that much of the information presented in this
article is, unfortunately, anecdotal in nature.
Clinical Trials in Veterinary Oncology:
A Clinician s Viewpoint 29
Steven E. Crow
Review of the veterinary oncology literature is important for
keeping up to date, but it can be time consuming and sometimes
frustrating. Results of clinical trials are published in a variety of
formats, including case descriptions, review articles, retrospective
studies, and prospective trials. They may be found as abstracts,
which usually present preliminary data and interpretation, as
interesting items or commentary in a newsletter, or as articles
in referred journals. In this clinician s viewpoint, a practical
approach to sifting through the mountains of literature is offered.
Critical Appraisal Meets Clinical Reality:
Evaluating Evidence in the Literature Using
Canine Hemangiosarcoma as an Example 39
Brenda Bonnett and Richard Reid Smith
The many gaps in our understanding of cancer are a great frustra¬
tion for veterinarians and their clients. Unfortunately, what has
been done has not always addressed the questions clinicians need
answered. How can clinicians deal more effectively with the
literature? Can missing information be identified, coped with
clinically, and addressed by researchers?
Lymphoma in Dogs: Chemotherapy 63
Robert C. Rosenthal
This article reviews important findings regarding chemotherapeu
tic management of previously untreated lymphoma in dogs. It
emphasizes publications in the past few years and discusses the
possible use of short term, rather than long term, protocols for
this disease.
Chemoimmunotherapy of Canine Lymphoma with
Adjuvant Canine Monoclonal Antibody 231 73
K. Ann Jeglum
Chemoimmunotherapy with adjuvant CL/MAb 231 offers an al¬
ternative treatment approach for canine lymphoma. Results of
treatment and prognostic factors are discussed and compared
with previously published chemotherapy results.
Mast Cell Tumors: Dilemmas of Diagnosis and Treatment 87
Kenita S. Rogers
Making the most appropriate choices for diagnosis and treatment
of canine and feline mast cell tumors remains challenging. An
vi CONTENTS
understanding of the heterogeneity of the disease process, the
associated paraneoplastic disorders, and the known prognostic
indicators can be helpful in making rational decisions regarding
each individual case. A multimodality approach may be needed
for optimal care of some patients, but the effectiveness of current
medical treatment strategies continues to limit our ability to cure
disseminated forms of disease.
The Potential Role of Inflammation in the Development of
Postvaccinal Sarcomas in Cats 103
Dennis W. Macy and Mattie J. Hendrick
Epidemiologic evidence shows a strong association between the
administration of inactivated feline vaccines (feline leukemia vi¬
rus and rabies) and subsequent soft tissue sarcoma development
at vaccine sites. Although more research is needed to understand
the complete pathogenesis of vaccine induced tumors in cats,
good evidence exists that inflammation plays a role.
Canine Osteosarcoma: Amputation and Chemotherapy 111
John Berg
One of the most important advances in veterinary oncology dur¬
ing the past 10 years has been the use of adjuvant chemotherapy
for treatment of the micrometastases of canine osteosarcoma.
This article reviews the biologic behavior of osteosarcoma and
discusses chemotherapy with the two agents known to be effec¬
tive: cisplatin and doxorubicin.
Canine Osteosarcoma: Amputation and
Chemoimmunotherapy 123
E. Gregory MacEwen and Ilene D. Kurzman
Canine osteosarcoma is a highly metastatic cancer commonly
seen in large breed dogs. At the time of diagnosis, approximately
90% to 95% of the dogs have established micrometastases. Dogs
undergoing amputation alone have a median survival time of 3
to 4 months. Amputation followed by cisplatin chemotherapy
increases median survival times to 9 to 11 months. When dogs
are treated with amputation and cisplatin, followed by immuno
therapy (with liposome encapsulated muramyl tripeptide phos
phatidylethanolamine), median survival times increase to 14.4
months, the longest reported median survival time for dogs with
osteosarcoma treated by amputation and any form of adjuvant
therapy.
Limb Sparing Surgery Versus Amputation for Dogs
with Bone Tumors 135
Rodney C. Straw and Stephen J. Withrow
Recently, limb sparing surgeries have been used in the treatment
of dogs with malignant bone tumors. These new techniques are
CONTENTS Vii
fraught with potential complications. As amputation is a time
honored technique in veterinary medicine for the control of pri¬
mary bone tumors, the use of newer, more complicated surgeries
such as limb sparing may be considered controversial. In this
article, amputation and limb sparing are discussed with reference
to case selection, outcome, and possible complications.
Oral Tumors: The Surgeon and the Medical Oncologist 145
K. Ann Jegium and Kenneth Sadanaga
Aggressive surgery has been the primary treatment for oral tu¬
mors through the 1980s. A review of the results of such treatment
is presented. A new approach using neoadjuvant chemotherapy
is proposed in order to improve long term prognosis in malignant
oral tumors.
Radiation Therapy in the Treatment of Oral Neoplasia 155
Ronald L. Burk
Oral neoplasia occasionally may be treated adeqtiately with a
single modality. Multimodality therapy, however, more often is
indicated. This article reviews the recommendations of treatment
of oral neoplasia focusing on the role of radiation therapy both
singly and as a part of multimodality therapy.
