That Boris Pasternak is in the great tradition
of Russian novelists, and the greatest writer
to have emerged from under the all-pervading
censorship of the Soviet State, is now accep¬
ted. Banned

Doctor Zhivago has attained world-wide
fame. At the end of Doctor Zhhago, trans¬
lated by Max Hayward and
Manya Harari,
there appear, in the British edition,

under the heading, 'Zhivago's Poems'. The
reader does not know what to do with these
pages; we are given no indication of how
they are connected with the

pages of
prose narrative which precede them, and as
soon as we begin to read this enigmatic
appendix we find it as wearisome as reading
verse in prose translation usually is.
Donald Davie has set out to discover what
function Pasternak intended these pages to
serve, how he intended us to read them, and
how they are connected with what goes
before them. He believes he has found that
unless we read these poems in the right way
we have failed to read Doctor Zhivago at all;
that, contrary to appearances, Doctor Ziivago
is not a novel with an appendix of poems,
but one whole thing, intricately interlocking,
in which prose supports poetry and vice-versa;
that the many discussions whether Doctor
Zhivago is a good novel, or a true novel, are
all beside the point so long as Zhivago's
poems are considered an optional appendix,
or bonus, to something which can stand with¬
out them.
To achieve this purpose, Donald Davie has
done two things: he has given us the first
poet's version of the poems in English and
re-created the atmosphere and sense of the
original Russian. Secondly, through notes on
each poem designed to hang together in a
continuous commentary, he has illuminated
the form and significance of the novel as a
whole.
For the benefit of Russian students, the
original version of the poems is also printed
in this edition. |
