One of the purposes of this handbook is to address the concerns we have listed.
The next to last section of the book, Emerging Topics, contains chapters relevant to
HIV, aging, Computers, and marketing. Although these chapters contain information
relevant to the current health-care climate, the information contained in these
chapters will also help stimulate our thinking about future needs related to the
logistics of health care.
Another primary purpose of the book is to update practitioners and researchers
in the fields of rehabilitation psychology and health psychology. There have been
some substantial changes and new information that will impact both our clinical
treatments and our research initiatives. The first four sections of this handbook
contain chapters about specific disorders or other important topics of relevance.
The intended audience for this volume is both researchers and clinicians. One
expectation is that this handbook will offer clinicians suggestions for ways to im-
prove their practices. Another intended effect is to stimulate research ideas and
initiatives. Because the chapters in this handbook address both practical issues and
theoretical ones, we can fulfill both purposes. In addition, students new to the fields
of health psychology and rehabilitation psychology will find that the chapters pro-
vide excellent overyiews of the topics.
A book of this magnitude does not come to fruition without the assistance of
