Zusammenfassung: | Using feminist archetypal theory and theory of the female Gothic, Fedorko shows how, in sixteen short stories and six major novels written during four distinct periods of her life, Wharton adopts and adapts Gothic elements as a way to explore the nature of feminine and masculine ways of knowing and being and to dramatize the tension between them. A distinction in her use of the form is that she has both women and men engage in a process of individuation during which they confront the abyss, the threatening and disorienting feminine/maternal. Wharton deconstructs traditional Gothic villains and victims by encouraging the reader to identify with those characters who are willing to assimilate this confrontation with the feminine/maternal into their sense of themselves as women and men. In the novels with Gothic texts Wharton draws multiple parallels between male and female protagonists, indicating the commonalities between women and men and the potential for a fe/male self Eventually, in her last completed novel and her last short story, Wharton imagines human beings who are comfortable with both gender selves. Fedorko's study challenges existing views of the nature of Wharton's realism as well as the nature and importance of her fiction that defies that categorization. It provides a provocative approach to Wharton's handling of and response to gender and complicates current assumptions about her response to the feminine and the maternal |

Fedorko Tuscaloosa [u.a.] Univ. of Alabama Press 1995 XVII, 198 S. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Using feminist archetypal theory and theory of the female Gothic, Fedorko shows how, in sixteen short stories and six major novels written during four distinct periods of her life, Wharton adopts and adapts Gothic elements as a way to explore the nature of feminine and masculine ways of knowing and being and to dramatize the tension between them. It provides a provocative approach to Wharton's handling of and response to gender and complicates current assumptions about her response to the feminine and the maternal Wharton, Edith <1862-1937> - Critique et interprétation Wharton, Edith <1862-1937> - Critique et interprétation ram Wharton, Edith <1862-1937> Criticism and interpretation Wharton, Edith 1862-1937 (DE-588)118767585 gnd rswk-swf Femmes - Psychologie - Dans la littérature ram Femmes et littérature - États-Unis - Histoire Femmes et littérature - États-Unis - Histoire ram Féminité (psychologie) dans la littérature ram Féminité dans la littérature Gothic novel gtt Hommes - Psychologie - Dans la littérature ram Identité sexuelle dans la littérature Letterkunde gtt Masculinité (psychologie) - Dans la littérature ram Masculinité dans la littérature Relations entre hommes et femmes dans la littérature Relations hommes femmes dans la litterature ram Roman gothique - États-Unis ram Roman noir (Genre littéraire) - États-Unis Rôle selon le sexe dans la littérature Sekseverschillen gtt Sexisme - Dans la littérature ram Verenigde Staten gtt Geschichte Geschlechtsunterschied Literatur Femininity in literature Gender identity in literature Gothic fiction (Literary genre), American History and criticism Man-woman relationships in literature Masculinity in literature Psychological fiction, American History and criticism Sex role in literature Women and literature United States History Geschlechterrolle (DE-588)4071776-8 gnd rswk-swf Schauerliteratur (DE-588)4179419-9 gnd rswk-swf Geschlechterrolle Motiv (DE-588)4222106-7 gnd rswk-swf USA Wharton, Edith 1862-1937 (DE-588)118767585 p Schauerliteratur (DE-588)4179419-9 s Geschlechterrolle Motiv (DE-588)4222106-7 s DE-604 Geschlechterrolle (DE-588)4071776-8 s HEBIS Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=007024268&sequence=000002&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
