Zusammenfassung: | Freeman reconsiders Longinus, Burke, Kant, Weiskel, Hertz, and Derrida and at the same time engages a wide range of women's fiction, including novels by Chopin, Morrison, Rhys, Shelley, and Wharton. Locating her project in the coincident rise of the novel and concept of the sublime in eighteenth-century European culture, Freeman allies the articulation of sublime experience with questions of agency, passion, and alterity in modern and contemporary women's fiction. She argues that the theoretical discourses that have seemed merely to explain the sublime also function to evaluate, domesticate, and ultimately exclude an otherness that, almost without exception, is gendered as feminine. Just as important, she explores the ways in which fiction by American and British women, mainly of the twentieth century, responds to and redefines what the tradition has called "the sublime. The Feminine Sublime provides the first comprehensive feminist critique of the theory of the sublime. Barbara Claire Freeman argues that traditional theorizations of the sublime depend on unexamined assumptions about femininity and sexual difference, and that the sublime could not exist without misogynistic constructions of "the feminine." Taking this as her starting point, Freeman suggests that the "other sublime" that comes into view from this new perspective not only offers a crucial way to approach representations of excess in women's fiction but allows us to envision other modes of writing the sublime |

spelling | Freeman, Barbara Claire Verfasser aut The feminine sublime gender and excess in women's fiction Barbara Claire Freeman Berkeley, Calif. [u.a.] Univ. of California Press 1995 IX, 202 S. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Freeman reconsiders Longinus, Burke, Kant, Weiskel, Hertz, and Derrida and at the same time engages a wide range of women's fiction, including novels by Chopin, Morrison, Rhys, Shelley, and Wharton. Barbara Claire Freeman argues that traditional theorizations of the sublime depend on unexamined assumptions about femininity and sexual difference, and that the sublime could not exist without misogynistic constructions of "the feminine." Taking this as her starting point, Freeman suggests that the "other sublime" that comes into view from this new perspective not only offers a crucial way to approach representations of excess in women's fiction but allows us to envision other modes of writing the sublime Art d'écrire - Différences entre sexes Esthétique Femmes et littérature - Grande-Bretagne - Histoire Femmes et littérature - États-Unis - Histoire Fictie gtt Féminisme et littérature Féminité dans la littérature Het sublieme gtt Roman américain - Histoire et critique Roman anglais - Histoire et critique Rôle selon le sexe dans la littérature Sekseverschillen gtt Sublime dans la littérature Vrouwelijke auteurs gtt Vrouwelijkheid gtt Écrits de femmes américains - Histoire et critique Écrits de femmes anglais - Histoire et critique Geschlechtsunterschied Prosa Schriftstellerin Aesthetics, Modern American fiction Women authors History and criticism Authorship Sex differences English fiction Women authors History and criticism Femininity in literature Feminism and literature Feminism and literature English-speaking countries Feminist fiction History and criticism Sex role in literature Sublime, The, in literature Women and literature English-speaking countries Frauenliteratur (DE-588)4113622-6 gnd rswk-swf Frauenroman (DE-588)4134195-8 gnd rswk-swf Das Erhabene (DE-588)4148823-4 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Frauenroman (DE-588)4134195-8 s Das Erhabene (DE-588)4148823-4 s DE-604 Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Frauenliteratur (DE-588)4113622-6 s 1\p DE-604 2\p DE-604 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
