Zusammenfassung: | Cheese, wine, honey and olive oil--four of Greece's best known contributions to culinary culture- -were already well known four thousand years ago. Remains of honeycombs and of cheeses have been found under the volcanic ash of the Santorini eruption of 1627 BC. Over the millennia, Greek food diversified and absorbed neighboring traditions, yet retained its own distinctive character. In Siren Feasts, Andrew Dalby provides the first serious social history of Greek food. He begins with the tunny fishers of the neolithic age, and traces the story through the repertoire of classical Greece, the reputations of Lydia for luxury and of Sicily and South Italy for sybaritism, to the Imperial synthesis of varying traditions, with a look forward to the Byzantine cuisine and the development of the modern Greek menu. The apples of the Hesperides turn out to be lemons, and great favour attaches to Byzantine biscuits. Fully documented and comprehensively illustrated, scholarly yet immensely readable, Siren Feasts demonstrates the social construction placed upon different types of food at different periods (was fish a luxury item in classical Athens, though disdained by Homeric heroes?). It places diet in an economic and agricultural context; and it provides a history of mentalities in relation to a subject which no human being can ignore |

spelling | Dalby, Andrew 1947- Verfasser (DE-588)120894203 aut Siren feasts a history of food and gastronomy in Greece Andrew Dalby 1. publ. London [u.a.] Routledge 1996 XV, 320 S. Ill. 24 cm txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Teilw. zugl.: Diss. Includes bibliographical references (p. 267-286) and indexes Pt. 1. The prehistoric Aegean -- Pt. 2. Food and gastronomy of the classical Aegean -- Pt. 3. Food and gastronomy of the post-classical Aegean -- Pt. 4. The Byzantine and later Aegean Cheese, wine, honey and olive oil--four of Greece's best known contributions to culinary culture- -were already well known four thousand years ago. It places diet in an economic and agricultural context; and it provides a history of mentalities in relation to a subject which no human being can ignore Cooking, Greek / History Food habits / Greece / History Gastronomy / History Geschichte Kochen (DE-588)4031445-5 gnd rswk-swf Ernährung (DE-588)4015332-0 gnd rswk-swf Griechenland Byzantinisches Reich (DE-588)4009256-2 gnd rswk-swf Griechenland Altertum (DE-588)4093976-5 gnd rswk-swf Ägäis (DE-588)4068425-8 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Coquinaria varia (DE-2581)TH000000810 gbd Ernährung & Küchenwesen (DE-2581)TH000005926 gbd Griechische Sozialgeschichte (DE-2581)TH000006930 gbd Kochkunst - Gastronomie (DE-2581)TH000005949 gbd Mahlzeiten (DE-2581)TH000005953 gbd Mentalitäten (DE-2581)TH000006155 gbd Griechenland Altertum (DE-588)4093976-5 g Ernährung (DE-588)4015332-0 s DE-604 Kochen (DE-588)4031445-5 s Byzantinisches Reich (DE-588)4009256-2 g Ägäis (DE-588)4068425-8 g HEBIS Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=007006001&sequence=000002&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
